Hi All, can you help? I have a 2010 Disco HSE 3.0 TDV6 with 134,000 on the clock. A few weeks ago the low coolant level warning came up on the dash but the coolant level was correct and the temperature gauge remained in the centre of the scale. After a few days of this the radiator fan engaged whilst in slow traffic which I'd never heard before and is now very noisy (it roars!). I looked on this forum and a discussion mentioned that the float in the expansion tank absorbs coolant over time and sinks which gives the false low coolant reading. I've fitted a new expansion which has cleared the low coolant message but the fan is still always on and not only is it noisy, it is affecting my mpg. Can the CPU control what I thought was a viscous fan? Do fans fail? Does it need a diagnostic reset? Any ideas out there?

On the D2 if the car senses an overheat it chucks on the elec a/c fans and the only way to stop them is to clear all the errors, so might be worth a go on your D4?

It is a viscous fan but I believe it can also be locked up by the cars ecu, if you look down with your torch you should be able to see a loom coming out of the fan hub, on my D3 the loom exits the hub passenger side, not sure on the D4?

on D3/4s the cooling fan is an electro-viscous unit and the ECU engaged it due to the low coolant warning, unplug the coolant level sensor and if the warning goes out this way you need an new sensor(PCJ500030), it might be a quite common failure seing just how many of them were sold by only one supplier http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-L...-Level-Warning-Sensor-PCJ500030-/400473661432.... though if the fan keeps working after that the fault code must be erased from te ECU memory, it might

Thanks very much for the replies. A diagnostic reader has come up with the code P0480 Fan 1 control circuit and it won't clear the code. The fan is still engaged so any suggestions as to what to do next Chaps?

I would check the plug and its contacts first then move onto the wiring, we get quite a few issues with the fan hubs wiring rubbing through where the wiring comes out of the rubber guide tube.

But did you unplug the coolant level sensor for test?

Follow the wiring from the fan hub itself roughly 12 inches ish and you will see the plug, its a flat jobby, I think its a superseal one and to be fair they are normally pretty good.

Thanks chaps, I've left it with my local independent LR garage (JSF 4x4) and it was a chaffed cable under a wheel arch causing a short, all fixed now - thanks for your help.
