Hi all, wondered if anyone could shed any light on this?

I have just bought a disco 1, (it is a bit of a wreck!). Having had a look around it, I have noticed the VIN number does not look to be correct. There is a panel riveted to the top edge of the grille panel, and it is only visible when the bonnet is open. On here, I have the VIN of SALLJGBF7NA0*****.

As far as I can tell, the N in this VIN number is the year identifier. On most sites I have looked on, it tells me that N does not represent a year, but M and T do? On other ones, it tells me that N represets 1995/96?

Only issue is the vehicle was first registered in January 1993? Also, I thought that it was VIN number LA****** where the discovery underwent a facelift and many parts are suited to pre or post certain VINs.

The VIN on the plate matches that on the V5, but it is still down as being registered in 93? Any ideas, will this cause me any issues?

there should also be a numer on a plate of lhs bottom of windscreen ,na is 95/96 somethings not right

Should have checked before purchasing!

If there is an issue you are going to have trouble getting your money back.

Is this error likely to cause me any issues? It looks as though it is the chassis number that has been put on a later vehicle, as it is still a 200tdi disco 1.

I paid less than scrap value for the vehicle, so im not overly concerned either way, but was just interested.

Are any of the components on discoverys dated to give me any clues?

have you checked no in windscreen and front chassis leg might give more idea

Hi Tom why don't you check the number on the chassis, just in front of the front wheel so accessible from the drivers front wheelarch.

I always remove the ashtray and check the date of manufacture on the bottom - just to make sure it tallies with the year of reg too - if it doesn't look further into the history...............

yep - the idea is that if someone rings/clones the car they don't think about replacing items with manufacturing dates on em like the ashtray......... it can be an indication that its a bit hookey

OK, So a slight update.

The reg number of the vehicle has (very very kindly) been checked by a member of this here forum on the microcat system.

The microcat system has the same VIN number as is stamped on the vehicle, except the only difference is that the age mark is represented as a K, not an N.

So, the chassis plate reads SALLJGBF7NA038883*, but according to microcat it should be SALLJGBF7KA038883*

A mistake in the stamping of the plate perhaps?

Did you check the other vin plate as james suggested??
Is it the same as the one under the bonnet??

as i see it front end may have been changed due to damage (if your lucky). some one said another stamping by front susp. does that match ? if so you ok if not ohh sh@t

As I said, I haven't got the vehicle back here yet, and as such, havent been able to check either the front wheelarch or the number in the screen.

I see your point Uncle Albert, but surely that is a massive coincidence that the front end was changed for another with EXACTLY the same serial number bar one character?

Ill have to wait till I get it back for a closer inspection!

note dvla/police normaly sieze vehicle first then prosecute/sort it out. if you cant show not your doing you need to sort it quick now cat out of bag,had this with motorbike , very dogey ground
