Hi all
Anyone had any experience or suggestions?

1996 P38 DSE.. Under load (over 20-30ish) im getting a vibration through the transmittion. Not unlike a prop shaft center bearing gone.
Im getting no knocks or clonks in the take up or comming off load.
As soon as i back off the throttle, the vibration stops..

Just been under it and theres no lift or rock in the propshaft UJ's. The "dougnut" rubber looks good. All bolts tight..And the spline slide is well greased with no lift..

Anyone any suggestions?

Anyone any suggestions?
Again, have been under it and nothing seems loose,Prop and flanges have no lift..Vibration is getting severe now..Kicks in at 50 and gets quicker with road speed..
Still no take up clonks or noises..

Would really appreciate any suggestions,as at a lost at the moment..

auto or manual?Ive got an auto and the transfer box has "excessive play"in it.That gives me a high speed vibration, but not at speeds your talking about. You getting noise as well?

Hi!
Its an auto..Vibration is teeth rattling at 50MPH + .Have had all four corners jacked up,and got no play in wheel bearings. All wheels are tight..
Been right under it again today, have got the slightest..and i mean absolute slightest lift in the sliding spline on the front prop..
Am gonna drop the front off tommorow and drive it too see..But the lift is really hardly noticeable, and may even be my imagination..
Everything else looks/feels tight and good.

Vibration is really only under load. When i back off it seems to dissapear instantly..No steering vibration etc.

Not as if it has come in slowly..Around a week ago,it just suddenly appeared...Really hopeing its not transfer box,or G/box..

mines the opposite! When accerlerating no props, when throttling back and on the overun then the noise kicks in.....

hi tel, you say at 50+mph, is it not there at all at slower speeds? and from your description of teeth rattling i would tend to think its something thats turning faster than the drive train, ie gear/transfer box input! can you drive through it? as in does it stop if you go fast enough? i take it it dont do it in lower gears just 4th/top? try leave it in D2/D3 and see if it happens at lower road speed! that may give some clues.............

If you have ANY play in the prop splines then that's likely to be what it is. Just changed mine (on a defender) and the exact same problem (same speed, same symptoms etc) completely went away. I had a slightly loose UJ as well (which was a different rattle at about 30 mph) but the 50 one sounds identical to the one i solved by replacing the entire front prop.

My spline play was about a mm, very slight - but was obvious when the prop came off.

Thanks for replies

Well have just dropped the front prop off.. The "possible" play in the front spline, seems to have dissapeared..The UJ on the other end,has a tiny minimul twist in it..Maybe 1mm?..
Took it for a run,and although its about 30% better, its still very noticeable and uncomfortable...Got home, and got a lever under the transfer box flange and there maybe a slight lift. ..Maybe my imagination,so will check again tommorow..
Will double check i cant get anymore tightness on the large flange nut...But just dreading its not an "output shaft bearing"?

Anyone ever attempted to drop the Transfer box out? Or if theres a bearing in there (behind the flange) that can be changed with box in situ>?
Obviously thats if there is lift there and not my imagination..

Cheers

Looking at the overhaul manual it seems quite a simple process to change the bearing in the front drive housing, though you'll need a big vice/hydraulic press to get it in and out.
