right a quick bit of additional advise: put a tap in the bottom of the drum you put the wvo in(also put it on a stand so you can get a bucket/hosepipe under/on the tap) then fill with wvo, allow this to stand for a minimum of 2 weeks unmolested (dont go shaking it up) this will allow the oil to separate from most of the water and other fats, then drain off the water from the bottom, then pump the oil from that drum to the other via the filter to take out the rest of the crud. without going mad and having a chemistry lab in your garage this is about as pure as you are gonna get the oil

I was thinking along similar lines, but I hadn't reckoned on 2 weeks. I will try not to be impatient with the first lot.

Fresh oil yes. I paid £15 for 20 litres - 75p so a little cheaper, but it turned out it was Soy oil with anti-foaming agent (in Newport as it happens.) There are a few scare stories around on this stuff so I am steering clear.
It looks like I can get waste oil for about £4 maybe less for 20 litres from a local chippy. If I can filter it for very little effort/ money that is way cheaper even if I cut it with diesel or unleaded.

I was given a small drum of oil (40ltr maybe?)
I want to just bung a bit in now and then just to use it - what can I filter it with? Must be something I might already have/really cheap as it defeats the object otherwise...
I will keep the mix mostly diesel

Another one I have heard is to use old tights...
i would use a pair of tights to filter out the large lumps of crap/chips etc
then use a diesel fuel filter as this will filter it better than any bag you find on ebay as it is designed to filter fine enough to inject into the engine i might also be tempted to fit an old school glass filter bowl in front of it to catch large particles and make the expensive filter (relative compared to emptying a filter bowl) last longer

Exactly my thoughts,
Thats far too much veggie oil.
It ain't going to last.
You should be looking at, in the cold weather, 30% oil, and 70% ordinary diesel.
If your going to try 90% oil, and 10% diesel, be my guest.
I am sure we are all waiting to see the outcome.

OK - I know I am being a bit aggressive with the percentage. I am being a bit devil's advocate. But what exactly is not going to last? Is it going to attack the seals in the pump/ or will the engine die from the abuse/ lumpiness when cold. Or will the fatty acids attack the surfaces inside the engine. I have read all these things, but a lot of it seems to be speculation rather than experience.

Pretty much the same here. I did the same with a 2.5td as well with no problems and all the "experts" say that engine won't cope with it. 200tdi's definitely have no problem with veg oil.

200tdi is the best,It is not too refined and deals with the heaveir viscous properties of veg better.Use rape seed oil if ya can cos its the thinnest.The engine will get a good clean out by the veg so have a set o filters at the ready.

Yes it has been really useful..Now all I have to do is get on with it.
I use WVO, let settle for 10 days, strain through a sieve, then heat to thin, then filter through j cloth or similar. Use 50/50 mix with 5 litres of unleded in very cold weather. So far, just replace the fuel filters regular and no problems. Running 200TDI disco. I keep a spare filter just in case. Been doing this for 7 months.8000 miles roughly.

Can I ask how you do this and how hot you get it? If you have tried cold filtering and it failed let me know.
