Would I be correct in thinking that the main reason for ird failiures is
atributed to seized or partially seized ird's putting excess stress on the
unit

Yep and once the VCU siezes (it will happen if you have the older ratio IRD) your IRD will be next with the possibility of the rear diff as well.

i wouldnt worry - it hapens to all VCUs in time irrespective.

IRD Ratios were changed in 1999, i think.

typical, mines a 1999, so the changeover year, so still dont know which i have?? done the tipex test on mine yesterday, and all seems fine

I'm having the same problem. Vibrating gaylander around 50mph, and horriible grating noise from somewhere under my feet. Unusual wear on rear tyres, and took it into main dealer. Price for new IRD (they didn't mention seized VCU) around £1600!! I'm gonna take it for a second opinion, as it may just be the VCU, and try to get away with IRD replacement by turning into front wheel drive only. Has anyone any thoughts on this...is it safe??

remove a prop shaft ASAP. Mondo mode (2wd) is perfectly safe = loadsa peeps do it - improved performance and fool economy.
