Noticed that myself. Surprising number of pay n plays started closing 10 years ago. Not many peeps on ere talking about their oft road adventures. Peeps dun't seem to be interested these days.

Most hobbies have ‘fad’ status for a few years then slowly dwindle to ‘hard core’ enthusiasts.. even if ‘hardcore’ means driving down to the local Tesco in your ‘off-roader’ once a week. I think overall most ‘activities’ have been curtailed in recent years because of ‘events’ and folks are focusing on other things. Less disposable income and uncertainty in the economy, especially since ‘austerity’ and other factors that has affected the economy.

A bit late to the party, but this is a fairly long thread. I got a OWUT time of 100 sec. It's knackered. I bought the vehicle about a 1000km ago. It's got 190k km. My questions are:
1) Could this be an original VCU?
2) How long has this been an issue? As in the time is a lot over the 70sec. given in threads regarding the VCU, so I'm assuming a linear degridation.
3) Regarding IRDs, how far have you driven with a bad VCU before the IRD got ruined?

I'm taking the prop off, as I won't be able to get a new VCU for a few months. The IRD is the part that worries me. The price for a recon is still fairly high, at least if I have to replace both.

1) Probably
2) Probably a year or two
3) Sorry no idea.

Removing the propshaft is less of an issue in a TD4 than the 1.8 because the K series is so light. I found my 1.8 was very understeery in 2WD.

100 seconds is very high. What weight and kength of bar did you use?

If you lift the rear, do the rear wheels spin? Are the brakes or hand brake dragging?

When you take the vcu and prop shafts oft, turn the ird pinion. If it spins freely then something is wrong.

>Weight and bar
5kg on a 120cm bar.

>Brakes dragging?
Not that I could tell, but there was a slight start/stop on the bars movement.

>IRD pinion
This I didn't test, but alot of the stiffness and reversing problems disappeared afterwards. I still have juddering while accelerating, but it's a lot less noticeable. The LH front CV Axle is due to be replaced in a week, there was some play in the wheel side joint and I'm replacing the diff front mount as it's getting a bit loose.
