:)hi all ,new kid in town. hope you all be kind to me and helpful.:confused: getting
nasty rumblin underneath, on wifies x reg 2.0ltr. xdi freelander ,manual, (hippo)? more a resounding sort of constant sound whilst driving ? increases with speed and almost drowning out the radio ? lol. not easy to pin point the area its coming from !! have been told possibly vcu ? have checked all the other obvious, wheel bearings etc. expect possibly very common on these ? how do i check and anyone bought one lately ? cost ? cars done 49000 miles.

To check the condition of your unit :

1) Jack up one rear wheel 2) put a 18" bar through the rear prop UJ and try to turn it. 3) it should turn slowly with resistance

Please note even a good one will be quite tight. A siezed one will feel like the handbrake is dragging when reversing slowly on full lock.

If the vcu is seized it could be causing further damage to the IRD and/or the rear diff:eek:

Erm !!! I think you'll find that was one of cartys quotes;)

Can the below not be caused by tireproblems ??

thanx to all reply's on the vcu question !! i will check it out thanx mondo. Maybe only remove the rear prop as a last resort to save the ird. I'ts not the tires as i have tried that. Anyone changed there own vcu ? any tips apart from paying a main dealer ? Thanks again for any useful suggestions !

Er think Mondo is the two wheel man. . .his vcu is out more than the gas. . .:rolleyes:

It could be if old (worn) tyres are on the rear and new tyres on the front.

I have read that its recommended that new tyres are fitted to the rear or all 4 wheels at the same time. To keep the VCU happy.
 
Hi Guys , well i reckon i will now be changin me tyres on the back now anyway as i av checked out me vcu this w/end ,as reccomended ,and it was well seized. i couldn't shift it at all with the bar it was just springing back , and the front shaft was digging in . My rear tyres are looking notchy too ( worn unevenly everyother knobbly around the edge ) and they feel very uneven. Big money just in time for christmas !! Ho Ho Ho . **** it !!
