If you're talking about Rover V8's they can all be built to the same physical dimensions with the right combination of front cover / pulley / water pump etc no matter what the capacity.
If the question is "can I fit any V8 from any vehicle e.g lexus v8 / jaguar v8 etc..." then the answer is anything is possible with the right amount of patience and skill.
From what I've read on the subject it's not really a straight forward bolt on type of conversion no matter what engine choice you make.

imo one of the best upgrades suitable for a series is the 2.5 petol from defender ,ample power ,quiet, bolts stright in using original fittings including lift pump
Why do you say it is a waste?

Molest a series 3 or even a 2a but leave the old ones alone!
A lot of the originals are now long gone or molested past worthiness, keep it as it is and leave it as an untouched collectors item. If you want to wreck a series at least do it with one that isn't extremely rare
