Hi, due to being broke I'm having to run my '86 110 defender with 7.50 x 16's on the rear and 205/somethings on the front which are quite a bit smaller. Am I killing my transfer box and should I remove the front propshaft and run it with the diff lock on?
Thanks

Obviously sort out the tyres as soon as you can, but I'm going to say the diff can handle the difference and you can leave the prop on.

Remember though that it's not just the difference in rolling circumference, it's the effect of going round bends that adds to it. I personally wouldn't but that's just me ;)

Looks like get those tyres sorted then. Obviously check on fleabay and the like, pick up some cheap worns.

Thanks for the offer top drive, but I live in Ibiza and there aren't many options here for tyres. The best price I could get for 4 new was nearly €1000.
I know it's not good, but I really don't have an option.

that makes sense given the name.....

i feel your pain on tires - just spend 800 quid on 4 for my wagon :(

Yep or paddocks ship over seas - they were unbeatable for price on insa turbo tyres when I bought a couple of months ago..

The center diff will handle the difference, it will just think it's going around a bend all of the time. The diff will do what it's meant to do.

Given your location (nice by the way) what is you annual milage? Not a big island so I'm guessing not great. Also how long/far has it been like this? Damage might already be done.

Centre diff will handle it no bother ..... Till it welds its self together.

750 -205 r16 is quite a difference.

Many thanks everyone. Temporarily sorted with 3 part worn tyres on tubeless rims!! very posh. Now I start saving.
The biggest problem here is you must have the same size tyres as is quoted on the registration papers of the vehicle. Mine only states 7.50 x 16. If I fit anything else it will fail it's ITV (MOT).
