Evening folks........It's cold out there!!!!

Always had a fairly soft brake pedal and noticed recently that when braking fairly hard the car pulled to the left.

Got home from work early tonight so decided to take a look.

The drivers side can, iper seemed to be the problem...... The sliding pins on the caliper carrier were sized solid. Took it of and after copious amounts of wd40 etc managed to get them free. Cleaned them up copper greased them put it back together and all seemed to work well. Took the car for a test drive........ Crap.... The pedal went almost down to the floor with very little braking effort. Pumping the pedal gives it some firmness but with even less braking effort. Now it's very cold and dark out there so quickly bled the front 2 brakes which seems to have given a little improvement but the brakes are still crap and don't really feel safe driving it like that tomorrow. There are no fluid leaks.. Pedal is softer when engine is running.

Anyone any ideas?????

Will bleed system fully over the weekend but any suggestions would be appreciated

Chris

Checked caliper again....... Seems to be ok

Just confused as to where my pedal has gone..... It's scary to drive...... Car will brake but pedal is almost down to floor....... If I pump pedal twice it goes very firm but no stopping power at all. Was thinking it might be servo but given that braking was ok before I freed caliper?????

Just checked again.... No fluid loss at all

drain then refill with fresh brake fluid and bleed the system thoroughly, can't be anything else imho

Cheers freelander and kizzeh

Will get it properly bled tomorrow..... Will bang a new set of pads in too...... Cant do any harm

Collapsed flexi pipe? Faulty seal in the master cylinder? I was originally thinking if the o/s rear shoe wasn't in properly then every tine you pressed the brake it would pull it to the left, similar to old f1 cars but I rethought my silly idea

Dunno...... Only lost my pedal since I've "fixed" the stuck caliper so keep thinking it has to be something to do with that

Will check the rear brakes again just incase freeing the front brake has somehow affected the adjustment on the rears...... Don't know how but baffled at the moment.

Unless it a huge coincidence and my master cylinder, servo or a vac pipe has knackered at the same time I was fixing the caliper

You said your pedal was soft before did you not? Did you take the caliper off to free it off or do it on car ?

Yes...... Pedal was a little soft but nothing like this

The caliper..... But with the piston in.... Was left on car and was free.. The bits that were sized were the to pins that fit into the carrier. The carrier was removed. So flexible hose was not disconnected

Any contamination on the pad face or disc face when you WD'd ...

Anyone on here know if the WD could effect the calliper seals ?

Maybe you have another problem and are being distracted by this ... start from the M/C and work your way round looking for leaks etc ...

Thanks dippypud

Can confirm no loss of fluid any where

Just one thought........ The guide pins are different lengths and shapes..... Wonder if I have got them wrong way round if that's possible or if that would cause a problem???

Does the longer one go in the top or bottom??? Might order some new ones anyway

Chris

On mine, a 2000 td4 , one is longer and straight and the other is shorter and has a recessed or stepped section.

Just looked on the auction sites and it would seem there are 2 different types...... On set has them all the same, the other has them like mine

Chris

Yep..... Those are mine....... There must be a reason they are different...... I will check them tomorrow

Chris

Cheers freelander.... You're a star......

Well the plastic bits referred to in that thread were missing off mine!!!!!

I'll get new pads, new pins, and do a proper bleed and see where that gets me
