Hi guys, after swapping my 2000 TD5 to a 2003 facelift model I've come to the decision that I don't really like the "upgrades" that come with the newer model, it just feels cheaper if you know what I mean, therefore I'm looking at buying a Disco 3 with FLRSH. Can anyone shed some light on the problems and pitfalls of buying such vehicle. I know they weigh as much as a small planet and you have to remove the body for just about everything but I am really tempted. Advice please. Thank you.

The Disco III TDv6 is an extra-ordinarily great vehicle, period.

All this business about removing the body to top up the screen-wash etc is bunkum.

You can change the cambelt with the engine insitu, for example.

They drive on-road so much better than any previous Discovery it's hard to credit, but true. They come in diesel form with the Ford/PSA unit - 2.7ltr v6 190bhp but can be easily and cheaply remapped to 250bhp.

The integration between diesel engine and 6 speed auto is just brilliant.

They do weigh more than an average DII - 2495 versus 2250 - but they don't drive "heavy" if you know what I mean.

I WILL be having one soon, they are THAT GOOD.

I've used D3's and D4's as my office for the last nine years. Happy to answer any questions if you see me parked up near Hartshead tomorrow. We usually let them go at about 150,000 miles or above. Don't think we've had any massive issues since 2006...

Lovely vehicles, different world from the D2. But do keep a few quid in the bank for repairs, 'coz they aren't as DIY as a D2's are. First thing i would buy would be diagnostics as i did with the 322

Thanks for the replies guys, it took me 6mths to talk myself into buying my first D2 after listening to all the horror stories that were flying around, that was in 2005, I only got rid last year after someone drove into it whilst parked up. The 2003 I bought just doesn't feel the same, great power but not as comfy and lots of cheaper feeling parts. I sat in a D3 yesterday for the first time and 'wow' does it feel good, I've always loved the shape but heard some nightmare stories, suppose it's like owt', some are good some are bad. Like the idea of saving some money for a diagnostics kit, makes a lot of sense. I've always bought manual vehicles but might be tempted with an auto, just don't think I'm old enough yet, lol. Any other advise from members with not so good reports will be appreciated. Cheers everyone, I'll keep you posted on my progress.
