Hi all,
Just had all 5 injectors refurbished and yesterday refitted. Hired Nanocom to re code ECU which I done then tried to start! Turned a couple of times then I got a strange winning noise like the starter couldn't turn the engine over??? Terrified something is damaged now!! Engine can be turned by hand but there is one particular point it goes super stiff?? Is it possible fluid is locking something up?? I'm not a mechanic so apologies in advance.

I took a video whilst a friend was trying to help but not allowing me to upload 😀
 
It's possible but I was quite thorough when doing this. Here is a random question but does it matter which direction you manually turn engine over?? I.e if done anticlockwise could I have damaged something or induced an air/fluid lock of some kind πŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆ

It is always best to turn any engine over in the direction of normal rotation.
does this mean you have done it the other way?

I am not sufficiently "up" in these engines to know whether that could have done harm or not, hopefully others will pop on and tell you.
But it is an unusual thing to be discussing, never seen it discussed to do with this engine or indeed any other on this or other forums.

Is it worth taking the injectors out and making sure the HG hasn't gone and it's hydro locking?
Had that on a 300tdi.

Nothing to lose by doing that, certainly.
TBH the cylinder heads on these vehicles are so complex what with having all the injection gubbins in them,
I'd also be giving the starter motor a large dose of looking at.
Those sounds, cos to me there are two, seem very concerning.
Can't imagine what he has done that would blow the HG, unless, as has been said, hydrolock has split it somehow.
Also ensure that the batt is up to snuff and leads secured properly to those terminals with those blasted stoopid connectors.

Manually turning td5 engine counter clockwise?

I’m changing my injector seals and might have been a bit too eager. Turned the engine counter clockwise one or two turns. Now when I turn it CW in feels like it’s not moving as easy. Have I ruined the engine?

So it appears hydraulic lock is possible.

That's exactly how it feels!
 
Surely it would take a lot of fuel to hydrolock it. And once the valves have opened the fuel would have been forced out.
 
If the injector is direct, i.e. sits right in the cylinderhead above the piston, it should be possible to suck/pump any liquid out via a small bore tube, such as used in fish tank or windscreen washer applications.
Once that's done, and you've checked the starter motor, you could just try again.
It's what i'd do on mine!

"In a TD5, 2,500 cc, 5 cylinders, each cylinder is 500cc swept volume.

If the compression ratio was 19 to 1, then the 500cc PLUS THE VOLUME OF THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER has to be squashed into a ninteteenth of the original total space.

So, the combustion chamber would be about 28 cc, thus the total is 528cc, squashing into 28cc, which is near enough one ninteenth the original total. It is a HELL OF A SQUEEZE! Half a litre of air squashed into half an egg-cup!"

The point being that it takes very little liquid to hydraulic lock a diesel engine.
 
Suppose the obvious question is how to clear the Hydro lock? The above suggestion seems straightforward enough πŸ‘Œ I've ordered 300ml syringe with tubing so get injectors out ( again πŸ˜‚ ) then pop tube through at bottom, then drain any fluid??

Do you think I will have to replace copper washers? Like I said, all 5 injectors have just been fully refurbished at Tower Diesels. Don't know if washers where Land Rover or Britpart though πŸ€”
 
Non of this explains the noise.. a hydrolocked engine would stop the starter motor completely so it would make no noise and probably get hot
