Bit of a daft question, but I will ask anyway. I wanted to check whether the brakes on the wife's freelander are binding, but when I jack up the rear of the vehicle the wheel does not spin even though it is not in gear and the handbrake is off.

Are all the wheels linked together so you can only check it by having all four wheels off the ground at once?

Thanks

Oh dear... could be the VCU. I'd use the adjusters to back off the brake shoes to rule them out, then if it'#s still like it, I'd read up on the VCU tests on here.

So are you saying that I should be able to jack up the one wheel at the rear of the vehicle and be able to spin it freely with it not in gear and the handbrake off?

It turns a small amount and then comes to a dead stop

If you have one wheel up, it is normal that it will not spin freely.

It has open diffs, but with the other wheels on the ground, you cant turn one wheel - well, you should be able to slowly ease it round, but the vcu will prevent it from spinning freely.
Raise both rear (or front) wheels and they will spin freely, with one turning forwards and one backwards.
Raise both wheels on one side and both wheels will turn easily in the same direction.

thats how it is supposed to be on the freelander, look up the VCU and what it does, try google for a good explanation.;)

with dave on this one, jack up both rears at same time to check out rear brakes, and both fronts at same time to check them.

if with one rear wheel up and hand brake off wheel wont turn with some effort vc is buggered and needs replacing ,they stiffen overtime till they get so stiff strain is put on drive train and something breaks usually ird or rear diff

Thanks chaps!

I will jack up the rear 2 wheels next weekend to check they spin freely. I will also read up on the VCU.

of course yu could look in the CFAQ section on this site - but why use stuff that peeps have spent years compiling?

As are the tests you can do and the results that peeps get - and a lot more.

On second thoughts look on other sites it has to be better.

To be fair he's spent a lot of time helping out by putting info up on ere and it's seems to be the popular choice to ignore it. I think getting grumpy comes with old age. :pound:

you have done more than most on VCU testing, Hippoo

Oi Oi some of us aquire it at a very early age

It is irritating when peeps on LZ carry out research only for someone to come on and link to other sites, but info from other sources shouldn't be excluded surely!

Just to re-package it and stop advertising other sites would be betterer :)

We must be mad. I should really get round to fitting my vcu at some point.

For those wishing to lift 2 wheels on one side... to turn the rear wheel and watch the front turn... you may find you need to put the gearbox in neutral (same for auto's) to be able to do this. ;)

why not look at what's on this site and if you then find other stuff on other sites - copy and paste on to here, to increase our knowledge base. Get permission if copyright.

I do, generally, even when I do a search on gooogle (after searching on here first ;)) it gives me links to LZ. That is most satisfying :)

Check the handbrake cable is releasing properly too as it can sometimes rust up being open to the elements....

Everything on google links to LZ! Sometimes LZ pages come up above the actual LR website
