Hi all,

Our Disco 200TDi Auto failed it's MOT earlier in the year on a failed handbrake cable. It was replaced by the garage and seems to work fine, but I noticed after a coupple of weeks that there was a light metallic 'clinking' sound from under the car.

As time went on it has got a little louder. It is not too noticeable witht the windows up but if the driver's window is open it is quite loud and really noticeable when driving in narrow villages towns etc.

It seems to be coming from around the middle of the car under the driver's side and suspecting the handbrake I tried applying it (gently!) whilst driving slowly and it quietens down substantially which is why I think the problem is something to do with the handbrake.

The noise is definitely speed related and is not there when sat in neutral or park.

Any ideas, suggestions, experience would be greatly appreciated.

sometimes when you've been driving in ruts, you can get a small stone trapped between the brake discs and the guards/deflectors at the wheels... it makes a horrible metalic screeming sound. Not the handbrake I know, but maybe worth a check?

Thanks for the input, but this is not a screeching it is definitely a regular 'tinkling' type sound. It sounds like the noise you would get if there was something catching on the propshaft for example. If you imagine a cycle wheel with something metal catching on the spokes it's a bit like that but not quite so tinny.

Hi JB, it's not something that has come adrift within the handbrake drum is it - like a spring or something.

I haven't done it on mine yet, but I believe it is straightforward to drop the rear propshaft and take off the brake drum to have a look.

Just a suggestion you understand.

While you're under there you might care to think about checking the uj's for wear.

Hi,

I would have done the job myself as I normally do, but the guy had a lift etc, etc so I thought I'd give my old bones a rest
