So after much time, work and money my 110 is almost finished! There isnt a huge amount of work left to do on it so got me thinking about a new project.

Very early stages now but I was leaning toward building an Ultra4 racer maybe! Just not too sure where to start lol anyone done it or got an experience in this area? Most likely going for Modified class. Also how much does it cost? Can't find much online!

Quite like the look of the Tornando Motorsport chassis but their website is down so can't get much info. Looks like I would need a D2 as a donor for the chassis, engine, boxes etc... Was thinking of using a TD5 of course as I know them rather well now, just more heavily tuned

Looks pretty awesome right?

Might be a ridiculous thing to attempt or do but I'm sure it'll be fun!

It's expensive.....

All the above will chat with you & advise. You can always see there motors so you know that it's going to look like
All do full cage kits.
Once built you will need to travel & hope the motor don't break.

It does get additive & I miss this

Yeah i know it will be pricey! I thinking I may be able to build one for sub £10k over the course of a year or two

Over spec everything. Build in your head then do some work.goong by your builds it will be fine good.
10k will be tight but achievable.
Most of the compete cars I built were 7k From scratch.
Get a MSA blue book for roll cages & regs.
1 old racer mrs used to drive daily.
Then drive to a comp then drive home.
Reliability wins every time :)

Yeah this year will be planning, prep and going to KOB maybe KOF as well. Also got to sort out a place to live!

Might go speak to Gigglepin, local to me and race in unlimited.

Performance ive got pretty much worked out. Same spec as my 110 but CRTurbos race spec VNT & a stronger map. Maybe some uprated headstuds if I can find any.

Fox or Bilstein remote res +2 coilovers

D2 axles, Xcess 4x4 LSD in the back to start with.

I believe tyre size is limited to 35" so Maxxis Treps or Cooper Pros on maybe Mach5 wheels

All just pencil ideas for now, ill do some proper research today and this week. Make up a build list/plan as I did with my 110.

Maybe ready for 2020 haha also got to get a towing licence and a trailer... lol

Well my current build list is already up to £6.5k  without the cost of an actual Disco  was going well until I remember rubber and wheels :rolleyes: lol

I'll speak to a few more people find out the actual running costs of it all, then see where to go from there!

I watch Ultra4 in the US. U.K. and Europe seem quite different.

Personally don’t have the kind of money to do either. But love the idea. So I can only speculate rather than offer firstborn hand experience. I guess my biggest question would be is a Ladder chassis live axle Land Rover really the best platform to start with?

What sort of petrol powered options have you got? And will you be intending to enter any other events that you may need to adhere to different regs for?

Yeah thats one thing I've noticed!

I would probably stick with the TD5 as the engine is quite cheap, easy to work on, easily tunable and pretty reliable + its an engine I know so if something fails I could probably fix it pretty sharpish and parts a reasonably cheap unless the engine thing goes bang lol

May well do yes which I'd got to look up as well, as U4 isn't on constantly and the cost of getting to King of Portugal/Croatia would be rather high KoF, KoV (Wales), KoB would likely be my only entries in a year so I would look at local trial events and see what else there is to offer.

Doesn't actually have to be U4 at all, more looking into some kind of 'fast' off road/rally raid type racing.

Most U.K. Race regs are through the MSA. Have a good read of the blue book. This covers everything from roll cages to go karts.
These show minimum specs and rarely change.
Motors I built 8+ Years ago are still within specs.(roll cages oversize tube)
You just need to check foreign rules.
I know French are slightly different
I.e. Fuel cells.
I'm sure whitbreads done some of the euro4 motors on tubular chassis.

Don't forget these costings...
Helmets
Licences
Medicals(if over a certain age)
Presents for the mrs ;)

If you do decide to take on the project please document it and keep us up to date. I'd love to do get some insights. I have a defender since January and dream of taking it to rally style events. Although it can't even make it off my drive at the moment

Of course. Id document everything, i find forum write ups a really good way to keep track of things. I often refer back to my thread to remember how I did something or when I did it.

@bankz5152
Forgot this extra costing...
You have allowed for 3 winches?
Yep they have a centre winch :)
Pulls them away from trees while winching forward.
That Mitsi was sold few years back
Unsure what Matt has built now.

Did you spot the rear hydo steer?
More costs?

That are good motors. Nice to watch when they are stuck & using all the winches.

Im starting to wonder if a standard bodied (i.e non traybacked) D2 would be any good, or would it be too large?

I think i could build a real bastid D2 for sub £10k (finances allowing)

Or is it possible to whip a Defender king cab or similar on to a D2 chassis or im looking at ££££?

Not sure how it would fit with the regs. But you can get a space frame roll cage from Whitbread to fit a 100” chassis if you want it to look Land Rover still. Or they do a buggy style cage. Essentially just a body swap so should make it easier to keep road legal if it’s of importance.

Anything is possible to build on a chassis.
And it's easier, like make your own bulkhead, doors, king cab.
Using as much standard items as you can.
Always build this so it comes apart easy for repairs.

Seats don't go too tight we used sparco evo 2 wide seats plenty of room.
Seat bases,floor pan etc easy.
Hardest part is putting the seats somewhere comfy to drive as these are not permitted to be on sliders.

I would find the next comp safari & ask questions with the msa scruitneer who will be there.
Chat with the drivers and ask them any Qs you may have. Ask to take pictures. They will always be happy. Do this before they go out on a lap as once they start most turn into grumps. These are open pits so you can see everything.

Here's a tip....
Go & marshal after recovering a few motors you may get a passenger seat for a lap.
Good luck
