Hi Dan, the only thought that goes through my mind is, if you have the tyres on the correct rim width as per the tyre manufacturer, why would you want to move away from that? Are you aware that in the event of a crash/and or insurance claim, you could void your insurance and perhaps be done for committing a crime?
Don't you think you've answered your own question then? Do you think it'd be OK for someone to say "ignore what the MANUFACTURER says and use them anyway"?

i ran 245/35/17 on a 10x17" rim and they were ok, BUT the tyrewall was so small (about half inch high!!) that it could barely flex and was therefore ok to use.
with an 85 section sidewall there is ALOT of flex, and stretching that across a wheel that is to wide is asking for trouble!! you'll be putting the sidewalls under so much stress in ways which they are not made to take that the tyres would become a MAJOR hazard both on and off road!!
in short - when it comes to tyres the manufacturers word is FINAL, they spend millions on testing and if they say there is a maximum rim width then listen to them!!

From all of the answers you have recieved up to now, I would have thought you got what you needed.
The issue here is safety. If you do something to your vehicle and you have an accident (whether it is attributed to you or not) there is increasing chance that:
A. Your insurance company will invalidate your claim &
B. The Police will bring charges as your vehicle is not to homologated specification and the changes made were contradictory to the tyre manufacturers advice.
I would ask you to bear in mind that IF anything bad happened to your tyres whilst you were on the public highway, you could injure or even kill someone else.
There has been a recent case where a guy modified his LR so it was no longer to spec, he had an accident and one of his children was killed. He has been given a 4yr (iirc) prison sentence due to his altering the vehicle and making it dangerous.
It's your choice of course...........................
I quite agree that some manufacturers don't recommend doing anything, but when a manufacturer specifies a parameter to stick within, especially for your tyres, it'd be wise to keep within them. I'd also suggest that if, as you already know what the manfacturer recommends, you do use wider rims and have some kind of accident you're giving the insco and police a lot of ammunition to use against you.
