So I want to fit the brand new spare. Of the ones already fitted 1 is 3mm above the wear marker and going on as spare and currently on the front. The other front is 5mm.
The 2 rears are about 8mm.
Is there a preferred way of fitting the slightly different diameters or aren't D3's too picky?
 
Fit the new spare on the front, remove the 5mm and use as the spare and replace the 3mm with a new tyre to match the spare.
That's what I would do, and have done, simples. :)

Not picky, D3 runs a proper transfer case and it can easily absorb that but I would seriously look at getting new boots all round if they're that low.
 
I'm not buying any new tyres just yet. The new spare is a Goodyear Wrangler with 8mm on.

That sometimes happens after previous owners change their tyres around to try to equalise wear, or don't even bother to change them around and the result can then be a new tyre sitting unused and unloved on the spare rack for the life of the vehicle.
The downside of equalising the tyre wear is that you end up with a bill for five new ones all at the same time.

That's what I am using, and the tread was around 8 to 10mm deep when I got four of them new three and a bit years ago.
But I sacrificed two tyres with 3mm on them the other two were very near the limit, but then previous tyre replacements seem to have always been at the 3mm mark.

Yep, I just thought while I have a bit of time this weekend I would utilise the spare and also I'm wary that a fair few have been getting nicked too. I would rather they see a worn tyre on there and leave it be or nick a nearly useless one.

I will put a new one on but not just yet ;)
I'm just tinkering atm.
 
If the spare was new with the vehicle, check that it has no age related damage, cracks etc, it will have a date code somewhere
 
Sorry to preach, have suffered high speed blow outs in past, and I have reached the age when I don’t mind reminders about safety .

I've just checked the thread depth of my Wranglers which were fitted three and a bit years ago, rears are 9mm each, the fronts 8.5mm each so this confirms that the new tread depth was 10mm.
The tyres were fitted in November 2014 I ready for the snow we never saw, so have now been fitted for 2248 miles and three years four months.

Interesting that because I haven't measured the tread depth on the spare. It hasn't been used so it may well be on 10mm.
Also if they last as well as yours do I am going to add another to the front sooner rather than later and have the 5mm as spare ;)
 
The factory fit tyres for my D1 were Goodyear Eagle GT which were great, very sticky so no slipping or sliding in the wet, which is what I've found with the Wrangler's, but the down side is they are soft and wear quickly, the factory fit set went in 22000 miles front, and 24000miles rear give or take...

Later the replacements were again new Goodyear Eagle x3 plus the unused spare with the best used tyre going as a spare, again these were replace with 4 Wrangler's back in 2014 at 44174 miles, sacrificing a couple of tyres as I wished to keep the same tread pattern on all four, again the best used tyre (Goodyear Eagle) was taken as a spare.

I'm not a hang about driver, my company Accord the front tyres are replaced every year that's 8000miles the rears double that hopefully :)
