I’m new to driving and bought a Freelander 1.8petrol mk1 2005 for me and my small family.

It’s rather basic and has not been modified in any way.

what are the largest tyres and alloys I can put on the car myself without having to do any type of modifying?

I have very basic understanding of car jargon so please can you kindly keep it simply, please.

Thanks

Terry

Looks like a nice Hippo and the boots suit it just fine. I'm sure a freelander specialist will be along soon but there are do's and don't with freelanders wheels and tyres you should prolly be made aware of. Welcome aboard ;)

Nice motor, what are you aiming for big bitchin bling wheels with low profile tyres gangsta stylee, or high sidewall smaller rimmed wheels like an off-roader?

I'm an advocate for Freelander.

However, given your introduction, I believe this is a case where a can of petrol and a Swan Vesta will save you a lot of problems in the long run.

Off-roader I think...!

Also guys once you’ve finished spit roasting me lol... will 255/35 R20 fit?

Biggest overall wheel tyre combination you can fit is ~29" diameter, common off road tyre sizes in this range are 205/80/16, 235/70/16 & 225/75/16. For reference, standard wheels / tyres are about 26" overall diameter. You asked about 255/35/20 and those are 27" diameter, so you could go up to 255/35/22 if you want the full bling. But they would stick out quite a bit more.

That would look sweet - if you do put 20'2 or 22's on a freelander - I want to see pictures.

Have a play with: https://tiresize.com/tyre-size-calculator/ and use the comparison tab and 225/75/16 as your reference size, any tyre rim combination that's under the magic 29" diameter will fit. Fittment details for your wheels will be:
Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD / Bolt Pattern) of 5x114.3
Centre Bore of 64.1mm
Rim width will be determined by what tyres you go for.
Rim diameter will be determined by what tyres you go for.
Rim offset will be determined by what tyres you go for.

If you ping me in the thread when you work out the rims and tyres I'll calculate the offset for you. Or if you want to do it for yourself, you'll need to first work out your rim width, which can be taken as roughly treadwidth divided by 25 minus 1 roughly gives you the rim width you can normally go half an inch either way from the answer to that sum.

So on the 255/35/20 you'd "get away with" 8.5J or a 9.5J but would be best with a 9J. Once you've got your tyre size finalised, and thus calculated the rim width, you need to work out the required offset, to do this play with: https://www.1010tires.com/Tools/Wheel-Offset-Calculator# and remember wheels sticking out past the arches are an mot fail and or endorsable, so think carefully.

I think with either the 255/35/20 or 255/35/22 sizes, with 9J rims with a 25ET offset would JUST be inside the arches and clear of the suspension gubbins, but I don't know how that would be for rubbing. the arch lip and or the outside of the arch liners?

You already have 17" rims, the standard were 16"

You can fit 225/65/17 Yokohama Geolander 015 straight on, without any modifications to the vehicle. This will make the speedometer more accurate, make it feel nicer on the motorway, and improve its off road ability.

However before doing that, you need to make sure the 4x4 system is working correctly, otherwise it can detonate, leaving you with an undrivable vehicle.
Also guys once you’ve finished spit roasting me lol... will 255/35 R20 fit?
Oh and this would fit (spacers could be needed, depending on wheels fitted), but will make the ride horrible, and be completely useless off road, and not good on it either. It will also likely be useless in the wet, and hopeless in snow. ;)

On my bog standard 16" I had BF Goodrich Mud Terrain 100/970 LT 215/75 R15's and not only did they look the biz but did everything I wanted. As much as can be done without changing stuff.

On 17" I don't know. Look at Muddy Mods after market parts and their grey fully modded Hippo as that looks enough and plenty cool enough.
