+1 but not fir to long as the water pump is on it,try removing ancillary belt and running engine
That looks like a lot of gunk in the turbo, is te engine breathing heavey? Or was it befor you did the head gasket?
Yes, there is quite a lot of oil about...wasn't there before I did the head gasket. It goes all the way inside the air intake pipe too
Is the head gasket in the correct way round? It does fit the wrong way round aswell, my mate did it and just as I was about tighten the head bolts I spotted it, there should be a little tab on the drivers side towards the front, with some hole that translate to its thickness.
If you have oil in the intake pipe are you sure you have connected the cyclone breather pipes up correctly, does the bottom outlet pipe head towards the sump and the one on the side connect to the intake pipe? Not sure if you can physically get them the wrong way around without looking but worth you looking. Other things to check, is the oil level too high?, if you remove the oil filler cap with it running is there a lot of air being pumped out?
Well done for getting there, and doing the HG yourself!
I have to admit as I read through, I didn't think it was the turbo.
Unless it is a roller bearing turbo (they don't have them) it would be a journal bearing where the shaft 'floats' in oil and there is always some left to right play.
Movement in and out (so inline with the shaft as if you were trying to slide it in and out of the turbo) is bad...

Glad it's sorted and you don't just jump in and but a turbo, you won't do it again tho now, you learn by your mistakes,
