I have about 2- 3mm side to side play and no up and down play in my spare turbo's impeller spindle, when it was on the disco it didnt smoke and worked fine and now I want to fit it to another engine. worth it or chuck it?

thanks, interesting link my turbo is off a 300 tdi disco so t25 right?
didnt think you could rebuild them without balancing the assembly but thats a cheap way to to fix it!

when the engine is running the oil that feeds the turbo also takes up some of the play so it wont be as much as you think

They MUST be balanced or the will eat them selfs. If you take off the nut & impellor make sure they go back on the same place (in line). Have a search on some other site's as I've seen a write up some where on how to rebuild one.

well, a chipped turbine wheel will throw it off balance for sure ...

so check them very carefully ...
