Hi folks,

Last year i bought a pup on a fleabay, a series III with a 12 J engine, which as it transpired was on its way out, but not before i had spent a lot of time on it including a new radiator. That engine croaked, a mate had a 19 J so we decided to rebuild that ( head skimmed new pots etc), and I also added an electric fan and overdrive.

Unfortunately a perfect storm then engulfed me. The temp sender unit failed, and before I got round to replacing so did the relay to the electric fan. Result, cooked engine and head gasket gone. Another day and a half I won't get back.

Problem is she is till running hot ( it has a 19 J expansion tank and 75 deg thermostat BTW). Temp gauge stays steady at just above cool and when she is worked quite hard, the needle goes beyond normal and then no stopping it before I'm pulling over to avoid an overheat.

Any advice, would taking the stat out help? or is there any additive beyond the normal antifreeze that will help to run cool? What temperature is the best to set the electric fan to come on?

Was the system properly bled out? it's possible you have an air lock in the head maybe? please don't bite my head off if i'm wrong, fellow landyzone users

As he says, are you sure that you have filled the coolant properly? Can be worth undoing the radiator top plug, and the plug on the head, to ensure it is all full and no airlocks.

Might be an idea to get rid of the electric fan, and try standard viscous and cowl, usually works better on these.

Test the stat and try replacing the oil cooler stat in oil filter adaptor. Check rad, and block, for sludge build up, are a few things it might be worth trying.
 
Definitely the cowl makes a big difference .. One thing that people forget, read that as I forgot too, is that there is an oil cooler integral to the rad and if this isn't also getting decent air flow over it then if doesn't cool too well, Similarly, check that oil can properly flow through the rad and that the hoses aren't blocked with sludge etc.

Agree with all of that. And also there is a thermostat in the oil cooler lines, which doesn't often work too well after 100,000 miles or more. Nobody ever seems to change them.

 
hi Folks thanks for ht e replies. the rad is only 6 months old and has only done about 2.5 K. It is a water rad only, but I fitted a separate oil cooler rad. to the left of the standard rad.

Any views on taking out the stat, or any coolant additive?

I wouldn't other than a last resort, or if it's stuck. As for additive I'd increase the %age of it to water to at least 50/50 but I can't say I ever really noticed a difference between makes.
 
Why not take out the stat, run it and find out if that's the issue? My 19j went through a stage of overheating when I changed the turbo diaphragm, guess it wasn't used to the extra beans. Failing water pump was the cause - have you checked yours?
 
Its a long shot but has it got the correct stat in it? My local Motor factor sold me the wrong one it was just chance I spotted it

Take it out and test it, or replace it. There really shouldn't be any need to run without.
Are you sure that the radiator is big enough? 19j have a huge crossflow rad, and water can absorb more heat than air.
And your rad wont be cooling so well without the cowl and fan.
I just use regular blue antifreeze in mine, about 30%, it works fine.

Water pump could be worth an examination as well!

Yes, and I have also bought new stats that didn't work!

A theory. 19j was a rebored 12j , so thinner walls and a strapped on turbo perhaps it will run hot, especially without a viscous fan

I am trying Evans waterless coolant. So far, a couple of days, no overheating problems and no overpressure problems either. I'll update the post in a couple of weeks when I can say it has been better assessed.

As far as I know, 12j and 19j are the same block and bores?
And mine never runs hot, steady as a rock on the gauge, on or off road, even towing. As I said earlier, much more likely rad is a bit small, or electric fan isn't doing the job properly.

19j was a 12j block but with a oil feed drilled from oil gallery across to lhs of block, ,they later just made the 19j block so some 12js have those

Take it the extra oilway is to feed where the turbo oil feed pipe comes from?
 
hi Folks , Few weeks on I used he Evans waterless coolant and I also put the mechanical fan back on from my 12 j. Any how touch wood running cool, and no problems so far.
Expensive solution but it seems to have worked.
