Got my freelander back yesterday after having the rear driveshaft replaced
It was noted on the invoice that while on road test there was a whine noise coming from the transmission box (gearbox i think) and would need to be looked at further to determin the noise.
When i raised this with their head mechanic he told me it could be worth swapping the tyres over (NSR on to OSF etc) as uneven tyre wear tends to give off the same kind of noise the tyres are those big chunky type not normal road tyres.
what do others reckon on this subject is it worth a try or would i be wasting my time???

Sure it's worth a try - but only as long as it means the tyres with most tread are still on the rear. Are they all the same size and brand?

If there is no change I would be going back to the 'head mechanic' and asking that the car be raised with all wheels off the deck so that the engine can be run with the car in gear and any noise will be easily traced. At least with the wheels up the tyres could be discounted. This is how I confirmed my VCU mount bearings were shot.

All 4 tyres were replaced at the same time and are the same make and size, now swapped them around and the road noise is a little better but not much.
even when i dip the clutch the noise is still there but that tells me it's the tyres

Edit... just checked tyre pressures and 2 were only 12psi and 17psi shame on me

now got 30 all round and it's a lot more quiet.

I had a very loud Transmision whine on my Freelander TD4 55 plate. Had the local garage remove the rear prop . The whine went completely but turned it into a 2 wheel drive. No problem there as it drives just like my Ford Kuga now. Could have had a gearbox change or refurb but it would have been very costly.

cant see the point of owning a freelander 2 wd

I purchased mine for the driving position and the look,Have back problems and this is great for long drives as I drive down to my old home town of Grays to visit relatives each year.
Mine is 2wd until I can afford to replace vcu.

I agree , however land rover are making 2 wd versions of freelander 2 and other models so there is a market for them , as we know freelander 1 in 2wd , is incomplete

As Roshe25 l bought mine for the comfort. Only do tarmac (140 miles a day) so no off road. Therefore 2wd is acceptable and comfort level is high. Just to upset the purest l also had a new Sony sound system put in and it's far superior to the Land Rover one.
