Same old story I know.... I've been trying to fix a leak from my 90's transfer box. So far I've swapped the front output oil seal (which helped a bit) and the bottom cover gasket (which also helped a bit) but it still seems to be seeping out from somewhere.

It seems to be coming from somewhere high up in the area where the gearbox joins on, coming down between the output housing and the extension housing. As far as I can see the gearbox/transfer box joint doesn't seem to be leaking.

There isn't loads, but it mainly seems to be leaking when the Landy's moving and then ok when it's stopped (once I've wiped the drips off). The drips smell like EP90, although not as strongly as I'd expect so I wonder if something else is getting in there. They don't appear to be ATF.

its qute common for them to leak from intermediate shaft where it comes through the box at front ,shaft is the same as big nut bolts to on middle rear of box it can seem that its coming out from between the two boxes ,to fix leak you would have to pull box either off gear box or back on some slave studs ,replace o ring and silicone seal box side of o ring around shaft so that silicone is pulled over o ring as it goes into box ,with sump plate off you tighten rear nut so that free play in intermediate gear is removed be careful as over tightening will put excessive preload on intermediate gear restake nut

Thanks. I can see how that would work but it sounds quite a big job. Is there anything I can do before thinking about separating the two boxes ?

Is the shaft o-ring covered by the extension housing ?

half of it is and not really as siliconing over out side never works
