Thinking of letting myself loose today on our Ex MOD Defender 110 and a spanner set !

Have been suffering with a rattling noise ( a new one ) like that of a bag of beer bottle tops which I have managed to localise to the transfer box.

My question is thus :

Looking at the prop-shaft where it attaches to the transfer box it rests on an output flange which behind is a metal washer.

This washer is very loose and causing the noise. It is rattling away and is not sitting very well at all. The gap is almost a centimeter ( 1/4 of an inch to the imperial mob ).

Can I secure this , having never removed a prop-shaft, never mind opened my nice shiny box of spanners. Is it a garage job, hence lots of dosh, or can I save my beer money and attempt this myself.

Also is it a sign of something else going wrong with our poor ole girl ?

Cheers

take it off.i took my entire engine and box out and popped a diesel in so if i can you can..

remove prop,clean grease and refit.

is the gap between flange and prop or flange and t/box?

oh and welcome!

erm not sure about that then without a piccy or look, does the washer hold in the oil and has the oil leaked out.if not then cut off the washer and drive on....
