Hi folks.

Leak on transfer box (empties its self in a day!). Every thread talks about input seals.... but looking for a 'tutorial' for what to do...is this it:

Most threads say i need to remove the box, but the thread above doesnt....
Cheers
Maybe if you tell us where it's leaking from we might have half a clue? Is it leaking from a seal, a cracked casing, the drain bung?

It's no good changing the seal if the oil is pouring out a cracked casing or unsealed bolt hole

Fair enough - i was trying to avoid 'yet another post' and assume my box was the same!

The oil is leaking from the front (engine side) of the box. I can see it dripping down from the prop shaft area, but haven't identified exactly where its coming from. My understanding was that it would 'most likely' be the seal. I can't see any cracks....

Tfer box has 3 seals that can and do leak, two are the prop flanges and are a simple job to replace, 3rd is the input seal and this is box out job, theres a tell tale hole between the boxes and if this is where the oil is coming from its hard work time!
A tin of aerosol brake cleaner and a short test run will give the the exact source of the leak.
If its empty in a day that some serious leak!

Yes, clean everything up and then you might be able to see where it is coming from. The output seals front and back can be replaced with the box in situ. if it is losing oil that fast it is likely to be coming out below the oil level, from somewhere towards the bottom of the box. You can lose oil from the input seal, where the transfer box and main gearbox meet, but as that's more of a splash seal, it's unlikely to lose litres of the stuff in a short time. Also worth looking at he gaskets between the different castings, the gasket round the sump plate, the bung - is it making a good seal? - and other more remote possibilities like imperfections in the castings.

Possible places.
Input Seal (require removal)
Out put seals (in situ)
front housing to casing (silicone in situ but will require some panel removal)
rear housing to casing (silicone in situ)
intermediate gear shaft / casing distorts / wears (fubar / bigger job / removal)
selector housing (silicone possibly in situ with removal of panels)
speedo (dry fit, but silicone won't hurt ,in situ)
drain / fill plug (in situ
inspection cover (silicone in situ)
PTO cover (silicone in situ)

Thanks for the help - i'll get onto this at the weekend and try and clearly identify where the leak is from!

IME, for a leak of that magnitude, you might be looking at something loose - I.E. very loose, or missing... . But, as said, First job is definitely clean it up, and go from there...

Good luck!!
