Yeah but have had a few Scouse mates in the past. Preston docks virtually closed Liverpool docks down as a source of knocked off goods. Liverpool has not quite ever recovered from that.

It was the same in the London docks - prices were so high because importers expected only 3 of 4 good shipped to make it through the port! On the estate I grew up on, the Dockers were considered to be well-off! What stopped them getting properly rich was they didn't know what they were nicking half the time - £1000 (then!) fur coats flogged for £20 etc.

Containers were invented at Preston docks, stopped the thieving buggers in their tracks. The only drawback being the ships got so big they couldn't get up the river or through the lock gates so it closed Preston dock as well. Bit of a bugger that. Talk about shooting yourself in the bloody foot. Worked there as a diver for a while. Few good memories and a few bad ones.
