having fitted a towing flasher unit on my freelander 2002 ,i have noticed it flashes once when not towing and when towing it does the same not continuious any suggestions

it's not detecting the trailer properly. It is correct to flash once when there is no trailer connected, but when the trailer is connected, it should flash in time with the indicators.

are the trailer indicators definitely working ?

it won't flash if your trailer indicator bulbs are not flashing.
