:(.After reading/hearing nothing really positive about petrol Freelanders I have been told by other half that it has to go!.I love the car but to be honest,waiting for the seemingly inevitable HGF and or VCU/IRD problems to happen,im considering a TD4 auto as a better and more reliable option.I have read through this site and others so before/if we trade it in are TD4's less prone to HGF than the petrols?.Are TD4's equally likely to suffer from VCU/IRD problems?.Maybe even abandoning Freelanders altogether would be the best.Any advice is welcome,please bare in mind my limited mechanical knowledge so any servicing is likely to be done by independants or dealers as a last resort.

the TD4 is the most reliable Freelander engine - but all freelanders are prone to suffering drive train and chassis and tyre related problems.

What do you want a 4x4 to do?
do yu NEED a 4x4?
 
:),Thanks guys,I dont need or really want a 4x4 as I wont ever be off road,never mind in a Freelander-cue tittering Disco,Defender owning relatives,:eek:.Really like the Freelanders good looks,thought owning a V6 instead of the 1.8 would be stress free but thinking every trip will be your last is fairly off putting.Also I'm at work during the day so the car is used mostly by my mother and grandmother both disabled so the Freelander is the ideal height without making things more difficult for them as they find Discoverys for example to be to high.Most cars are too low down so any other ideas for would be welcome,any car needs to be an automatic,I'm not that fond of autos but needs must.Anybody ever had a Volvo S80?,thinking of one of them an 03 on model if not a TD4 Freelander pre 2004 facelift.Love your avatar Grippa!.
 
Hi m8,
no 4x4 is going to be cheap to run or to keep up.The td4 freelander is by far the best bet out of the freelanders.Mine has done 153000 miles with very few problems and the engine still sounds as sweat as a nut.If your H/G does go you will have to dig deep in your pockets.If i was you i would move it on a,s,a,p.( dont traide it in at a stealers they will rip you off ) Best of luck.;)

Hi i dont know what your budget is BUT if you dont need a4x4 but need the height maybe a Nissan Quasqui or similar would be suitable.
I really like the look of this car got the height etc and they are bringing out a 4x4, but the current 2 wheel drive looks the Bollocks and i think they start from 13'500 GBP and thats new.

The td4 autos are a very nice motor mines a 2003 bin modified ta bits un go's like er rockit and i get 34-38 mpg aint bad fer a 4x4 , brill off road ,mines bin well hammerd, never bin in a garage ,fix it mself but to be honest not a lot has gone wrong wiff it, the latest freelander doozle is a newer bigger engine and they have tinkered with the 4 wheel drive ,time will tell on that one, dont get a slitty[ spit] the td4 is the dogs. . . .:)

Agree on this MING...but the guy did say he didnt need a 4x4 really and i really like the look of the Quashqui..
My own prefference would be to stick with a freelander the new 1 or an old 1 as long as it was a Diesel...
No petrol thats for sure.:D

:).Thanks again,your advice is as always much appreciated.Next car wont be new,my budget is £8000 max.Hopefully my current V6 will be gone before christmas.I will keep you posted as to progress,maybe not goodbye if the right TD4 ES 5 door turns up.A few last questions for now,as most issues regarding petrol Freelanders are to do with overheating problems,how hot will the TD4 run?,is it troublesome due to overheating?.
 
dont think so. Dont forget the probs that a generic to ALL Hippoos - ie VCU, chassis cracking, diff mounts, tyres scrubbing etc.
 
:).Hello again,trade in update as follows,decided to give up on Freelanders altogether.I am considering an automatic 2001(51) Discovery V8 ES,35k,full LR service history from a local non LR dealers for £7000,is this a good price for this car?.Other family members have more or less self maintained diesel Discos,Defenders for work and play so no major problems with most issues,unlike Freelanders!.The same guy who LPG coverted my Freelander will do a Disco conversion for £1500.My mileage has dropped from around 15-18k a year to around 7.5-9k for the time being,so in short term if getting the Disco it will remain using Petrol,longer term I'm looking to LPG convert it and keep it for a 4-5 years or longer if trouble free.That was my plan with the Freelander but as its unlikely to last that long I decided my best option is to cut my losses and consider a Disco instead.What say you people?,cunning plan or flawed logic,any advice most welcome.
 
Mates just got a 98 disco 300tdi argyll for £1600 full MOT & Service 7K sounds like a lot of cash have a look on autotrader see what's on offer there.
 
don't wish to persuade you away from the green oval, but the wifes zafira is an ideal height for elderly rellies getting in and out; also good for getting tiny people (children) in and out of their seats without hurting your back.
