I went to my local lifting gear company and brought some shakles and straps to suit, I got two short straps front and rear that are kept on the motor, then a long strap that is attached to the two straps, the shackels are rated higher then thestraps but at least fit together with gloves and cold wet hands.

Good & cheap are not usually two things that go together when you're talking about something that could be potentially be lethal. I'd say spend a little extra to get something you know you can rely on.
Here's what I got the other day
Recovery strap:
PM642 Pro Comp Recovery Strap. 2in x 20foot. 20,000lb rating.
Shackles:
Bow Shackle 4.75t
The quality of the strap is so good that I actually considered hanging it up on my wall, just to look at it.

Got mine from ebay as well, orange too so match my colour scheme 
I got a 2m, 5m and 10m. Although i think i need another 5m as i have to keep doubling up the 10m in most situations :doh:

I'm not saying they're all bad on ebay but that's the thing, you can't be 100% sure what you're getting.
I had an ebay tow rope snap on me while trying to shift a relatively light weight tree branch. I also had another ebay 2t strap get damaged when I had my Gaylander towed by a BMW 3 series to a local garage. Seen it before my very own eyes, so I decided not to chance it when buying a new strap.

Well using a 2t strap to tow something that weighs mor than 1t is asking for trouble matey, the company i got mine from make nothing but towing traps and ratchet straps its there buisness so i was confident they would be ok there also a GB company not some jap/chink ****e, and ive more than happy with them.
Doesn't matter where they're from, if they're too weak, they'll snap. eBay is too much of a generalisation - there's literally thousands of suppliers on there, of greatly ranging qualities. Personally, I bought my most recent ones from Winch Solutions, but there's a few other suppliers out there and its worth shopping around for the best deal.

ound:ound::5bsmilielol5::5brofl::5brofl:It depends what you want it for, but if its for towing then slightly less than the strength of your recovery points, is ideal. That means that if it fails in overload, you'll snap the strop, rather than bend or destroy a recovery point on the car. Having said that, most strops you see will be something like 7t or 14t (60mm width, or 60mm doubled over).
I personally have an 11t rope of about 10m length, 2m strop, 4m strop and 2m competition strop (ie with loop and hook already attached, to save time, rather than using a shackle). The strops are mostly used around trees. I've used the rope and strops for occasional recovery, but also have a winch.
