Chaps,

I've just completed the re-build of my '90 Soft Top (see below) using the Exmoor Trim XS hood and Safety Devices NAS style roll cage;

It's been a brimmin lot of work and cost twice what I'd originally budgeted

Anyway, I'm getting a lot of flapping and a lot of noise from the hood - especially on the sides with the plastic windows.

Spoke to Exmoor who advised me to make sure that I had enough tension applied; I've now tightened it to within an inch of its life, which has helped, but there's still a lot of flapping; due primarily (I think) to the expanse of material.

I've just ordered some roll cage foam from Demon Tweeks to try and pad it out a bit more and prevent the hood from smacking against the metal roll cage hoops, but was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same problem and how they managed to resolve it.

Any advice; much appreciated;

Yep, mine does the same. If you have the normal canvas hood it should shrink tad, but bear in mind that if the XS is mohair or double duck then it probably wont shrink at all.

I found the hood slaps of the roll bar support brackets, which cant be helped. It has never bothered me really, have far more worrying clonks to be attending to :-(

Could it simply be that you've got an ET hood on a SD roll cage? I have an ET hood on ET sticks on my 90 and no flapping or noise, other than engine and road noise of course.

It was all supplied by Exmoor; it's their HD bar set (which is actually the back end of the Safety Devices L188 8-point roll cage); and their XS hood.

You can try the cheap and cheerful, go to homebase , wickes and by some pipe cladding if you can find the right diameter and see if this helps. used it on my sticks and helped stop the flapping a bit.

There will always be an element of noise, the sides aren't rigid like a metal top so they are going to move (and therefore make a noise) to a certain extent.

Just spent £65 on roll cage padding

It caters for pipes that are approx. 45mm in diameter and has circa 1-inch of foam padding.

Anyway it arrives on Monday; will report back and post some pictures.

Just been out for another drive, and realised that different bits flap / slap at different speeds.

At 60 mph it's actually the roof (just behind the seats) smacking against the top of the front hoop section....which is probably why is sounds so loud as it's right next to my head.

The mid hoop section is attached to the hood with a neoprene / velcro sleeve and the rear hood section is pulled very tight against the rear hoop with a series of straps - so no problem.

I've ordered 6 meters of padding.....so if it's metal it's gonna get padded on Monday!!
