The vent cover on the wing has broken. I can't decide whether to replace it or save up for a snorkel. I don't go off roading, so what, apart from asthetics, would be the advantage of fitting a snorkel?

What are your thoughts on them?

What's on offer?
 
I fitted one purely because I like the look of them, which some may call sad, but it's my Landy:rolleyes::rolleyes:. I've got the mantec 'plasic jobby' which like I said I got because of the looks;););)
 
The advantage of a snorkle is that non LR folk will always be asking you if its an exhaust. I always tell em "yep" :D
 
Hehehe. The head teacher were I work asked me if I had a new exhaust on Friday... then pointed to my snorkel...
 
Well you get the "air ram effect" on some snorkels (mainly the safari style) that is supposed to boost power while travelling at speed, though you probably won't notice it. And if you travel on really dusty roads it obviously helps keep dust from the filter.
 
do it, they look good and who knows you might use it!

i always get asked whats the chimney for on the front lol
 
If you fit one at least fit it properly. A safari might give you a few more horses (I would say mine gives a tiny increase in power) and if you get serious floods it will be a bonus. No point sticking it on but not doing it properly because then it is literally dead weight. Seal every pipe to the engine with silicon.

Agree make it fit propperly RTV silicone is your friend and don't forget to seal the air box vent holes. Don't use cheap bathroom silicone sealant as it will deteriorate.

I don't believe you will get an increase in power at all in fact. The "Ram" effect might help slightly but I very much doubt it. The last thing you want is the snorkle facing forward when doing any serious offroad driving. In actual fact you are probably limiting its ability to get air by extending its run through a narrow pipe/enclosure.

The ammount of air per minute you need is massive especially at high revs. Sometimes fitting an snorkel can increase intake noise and people sometime believe that this has increased power much the same when people buy bling items and believe its made their vehicle faster better etc usually equates to money spent when in reality it hasn't made any difference at all.

Is there much difference between the Safari and mushroom (don't know the proper name!) type?

Is it the case that you pay for what you get?
 
By "mushroom", do you mean mantec?
The safari items are more durable, so if you are off roading etc, they are indisputably the best :behindsofa:
If you are getting a snorkel just for looks, don't bother with a safari, since you are paying extra for something that you will never properly use. Besides, they look rubbish and the "air ram effect" is utter bollocks. Get a mantec or cheaper.
 
I'm fitting mine today. Absolutely could not justify the money for a "branded" one - so went for the "no-name" Paddocks jobby. The contents of the box look fine - it's not complete ****e. I don't do lots of extreme off-roading - if I'm honest, I'm fitting it for looks. BUT I will make damn sure it is fitted properly - last thing I want is to find myself in deep water and then discover it leaks. I've got Tiger Seal for all the joints, and nice shiny new piece of air hose to go between the intake and the air filter housing.

I was going to put up a seperate thread of how I fitted my Safari Snorkle, but might as well put the photos here for now.


Taped the template to the wing and marked the holes

Instructions state drill 16mm holes but I driled the holes initially 12mm first. Then increased them to 14mm for a better fit. I used a step drill bit.

Marked the holes in the A-pillar, and drilled to 3.5mm

Then fit the snorkle.

I took the blanking plate off the top of the wing to give better access for attaching the nuts to the snorkle bolts, inside the engine bay.

Havent uploaded the photos of the air pipe connections, will do that later. Feel free to comment if anyone has done this differently.
