Hi

I recently purchased a 1992 Disco 1 V8i, with the Hotwire system. There are no cats nor Lambda sensors, so its running on Open Loop mode.

The wagon starts first time, no matter how cold the weather. It runs very well and revs all the way up to about 4,500 rpm, where it goes not more. She also idles smoothly.

I see lots of posts about Lambdas and LPG but my wagon runs on petrol only.

My question is, can I improve on fuel efficiency (and even performance) by fitting Lambda sensors (and changing the tuning resistor to the ECU)?

I know, why fix something that's not broken but I am curious and love tinkering :)

Cheers

Yes you can fit a pair of oxygen sensors,you probably wont notice any power increase,but fuel consumption should be better.
If you are REALLY interested in understanding more about how EFI works in live time and enjoying a constant view of how your engine is running,look here;
MTS Modular Tuning System
A pair of AFR gauges will teach you more about how EFI runs an engine than you will learn in a book.

Thanks for the response "eightinavee". It's kind of what I suspected.

To fit the AFR gauge, can I use the sensor of the EFI system, or do I need to fit a new sensor?

Cheers

Catalysts mode or closed loop? this link may help u decide Fuel injection

But note the paragraph:
Another downside of the catalysts mode it clamps the mixture slightly richer than it needs be under light load to keep the un burnt hydro carbon pollutants to a minimum, so the economy suffers slightly.
