As many of you know I am in the middle of a full rebuild of my 1984 Range Rover Classic.

I am about to do the protection on the chassis and have been given a quote of £250+vat (£300) to shotblast and galvanize the chassis.

Has anybody had a old chassis galvanized? What are the pros and cons by doing this?

My chassis is solid as far as I can tell by using a big amma

But how are they going to shotblast the internal rust? Will an acid bath remove it?

Will the rust in the core not just stifle once its galvanised?

I had an in depth conversation about this to the main man at Richard Chassis at a show this year.
Long story short - no, as it will rot from the inside out due to the galv process not being able to take to the inside of the chassis due to it not being accessible to be prepped properly.

Thanks, I did do a search and found a bit of advice but still up in the air.

The company say thay won't guarantee the inside.

By the time I have prepped and painted the cost won't be far off the same.

Leeds galvanising use an acid bath. And drill holes to allow it to flow into all the nooks and crannies

I'd do it,any galv that sticks is way better than you will ever do with a paint brush.I had a SIIA chassis done last year that was far from perfect,it has sat outside since because I simply dont have time to build it,nor inside room to store it.I looked inside it with a borescope,they did a good job,the sandblasting on the outside was easy to see,as a different place did either job.On the inside I had to rely on the acid dip to do the work,it was a darn sight better than trying to squirt paint or waxoil inside.
I paid about £220+ Vat for both jobs,and I cant help thinking that rust would be present if I had wire brushed and painted it - then left it outside for one of the wettest/coldest winters in years...

The drilled holes are to stop it exploding in trapped areas.Big safety issue.
