Hi There

Is It me or am i the only one that thought landrover never put a auto box in a defender?.

If they did it at the factory, what box did they use?
And how reliable/good was it?

Finally i ask this question because i have spotted a tombraider for sale with an auto box and wondered how good it would be to drive.

I Guess im getting old and anything that makes driving a landy easier and smoother sounds good to me.:)

The tomb raider is probably a v8 one hence the auto box.
Look at ashcroft transmissions site.

its quite simple with 300tdi as disco auto box is direct replacement for manual r380,you need plate for engnie ,drive plate, etc ,the only tricky bit is mounting gear selector which either you make your own or buy nas spec consol, ive got auto kit if any bodies interested for 300,200,very similar but engine needs to go forward to fit box as it is longer than def lt77,but you need disco 200 box ,the zf boxes are all the same but have different valve blocks for diesel and petrol ,and petrol box will be **** on diesel so you need correct one for engine

i had a tuned 200 tdi auto disco any was impressed by how quick it could shift.

the later 300 tdi autos can't be easily tuned up and can lead to disapointing performance.

It's easy enough to put and auto in a 90. i have one fo my td5 90 when i get a few minutes to fit tit

Auto's are better for traffic and general around town, and also apparently better offroad.

Although they are not so good pulling away with the diesels, the V8 is a lot better.

One thing that does annoy me is you have to go just over 50mph to get it to change into 4th and when following people I can't maintain that speed due to their slowness so its often changing between 3rd and 4th. That's more of a rant towards other drivers though :p

ive often thought those people shouldnt be allowed on the road out side of working hours, how can you blindly slog on with a queue behind and not feel a problem

unless you have a v8 i wouldnt bother, you will be very dissapointed with the performance

I seem to remember something about the original tomb raider landy from the film being built as an auto because Angelina Jolie couldnt drive a manual so presume they carried it into the production models, could be wrong though.

Many thanks guys.
I think the tomb raider has had all sorts of performance upgrades done to it.
That would explain some of the comments about it being sluggish as standard.

Could this auto box have been factory fitted? special order?
Have emailed the seller but , as yet have had no response.
Its the long wheel base version and the add says only 133 made?

if anyone knows of one that is up for sale please message me

many thanks
Ewan

To auto or not to auto that is the question; Fact it takes more horse power and torque to run hydraulics. Gears take less. There is a trade off of what you want. consider replacement cost for repairs, easier to change clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearings, than replace an auto trans.
It is what each one wants and that's what counts :D:D:D:D

theres no loss of power after t/c lock up, replacement is essentially the same in that both entail gear box removal, but on the positive no more hand brake hill starts ,inch your way when doing tricky manovers without juggling clutch ,
