I just thought I would post a couple of photos of before and after new chains.
the old ones have done 170000 miles.
I sure someone will point out the links are in the wrong place on the old ones but all is good

Would be a lot easier if the photos were the right way up. And yes i confirm the links are in the wrong place.

You sure the crank sprocket teeth are ok look thin to me. .

Agree they look a bit tired. Like bloody hens teeth to get hold of though. When i did mine luckily they were good. But would have changed it to be sure if i could have got one at the time. But couldn't.

How do you know the links are in the wrong place, Wammers? I can see 2 links that are copper coloured rather than silver. Are they supposed to line up on something?

Looking closer at the photos both photos appear to show sprockets in correct place. It was harder to tell without copying them and enlarging. If you look at the second photo you will see a mark on the crank sprocket. This must line up with one of the links with engine locked at TDC. If you look closely at the pump sprocket you will see two small arrows. One marked with a 6 and one marked with a 4. 6 must line up with other link on six cylinder engines or with 4 on four cylinder engines. You may have to copy and enlarge the photos to see properly. In case anyone else does this job and has trouble getting a crank sprocket the BMW part number is 11 21 2 243 401. I have posted it in my EAS "How to" for reference.

you can click on the photo again to have it show in its own tab, then holding down ctrl and pressing + will zoom the page - will zoom out. you can also use the mouse scroll wheel

If it was me i would do everything to find another sprocket, the one seen are so worn it may cause chain slap or heavy/quick wear on tensioner and chain

+1 Will definitely cause accelerated wear of the new chain.
