Hi all, I've just bought a timing belt kit for my 200tdi, however after opening it I've found it has come with a britpart tensioner.

Has anyone had any bad experiences with them cos I've heard all the horror stories about other britpart stuff.

Also what are dayco belts like?

Thanks

Albert

I personally wouldn't use the britpart tensioner but your choice.

Dayco are OE suppliers to LR so that will be fine :D

I used a Britpart tensioner when I changed the belt shortly after I got my 90, before I knew the perils of the blue box. To be fair when I did the belt again after 4 years and 30,000 miles it had performed admirably.

Second time round I used a Bearmach kit which came with a Dayco belt and an ING tensioner.

Used a Britpart tensioner last time without any issues, coming up for replacement again very soon and wouldn't hesitate to use one again.

For what it's worth, last time I changed the timing belt on my 200 Tdi I had an AllMakes and a BritPart tensioner both fresh out of the box - comparing the two, the AM one was noticeably smoother, felt better lubricated and had less play in the bearing. Binned the BP one.

For the sake of such a cheap part, I'd just go with a decent one.

Ordered an oem tensioner, and when it turned up it came in a blue box. Spoke to the supplier and they assure me that they wouldn't sell anything they fit themselves. so I think I'll go for it. The oem one was dearer than the first tensioner I got and it has more stamps and markings on it than the first aswell. I think It'll do the job ok so I'm going to stick with it and see how I get on.

If it is Britpart, and isn't just a Britpart bag with a genuine part in it, DO NOT FIT IT.

The bearing on a genuine part would be SKF, FAG or INA.

Dayco are OEM - they are top notch.

Ok thanks. It definately has some letters on it so ill check tomorrow.

Usually, letters on a bearing is a good sign. Cheapy ones usually have nothing on them. If it said, "Sang Ching Bearing Co." you would probably think, 'what the hell is this', so these guys usually just put a number and no name because they know their stuff isn't up to standard.

Yeah, I'm a bit wary of stuff with little or nothing written on them. The first britpart one I got has nothing on it at all and it feels a bit loose although it does have a 24 month warranty on it. Means nothing really cos it will have nearly run out before I've done much with it.

The thing is, the 24 month warranty is pretty worthless. You might get a replacement tensioner, but that's about it.

If it failed, and you tried to claim all the expenses incurred due to it's failure, you would need the best legal team in the country.

Yeah true, I suppose warranty only concerns the individual part. I'm not using it so it doesn't matter anyway.

Have to be honest, I'm not a fan of the blue box yet I've fitted those kits to all three of my last defenders with no issues what so ever!!

Just checked the bearings and they have NWB stamped on them. Comparing the two, the bearings on the oem tensioner feel a lot better.
