Hi

I wondered if anyone could give me a comprehensive list of tools I'll need to change the Timing belt on my 1993 Defender 200Tdi. Would it be worth buying a timing tool kit from fleabay or is there anything else I can use thats just as good to stop things moving instead?

When I first did mine (300TDi) I bought a crankshaft locking tool & pin set (inc puller) from Difflock, not cheap but made the job a breeze. 5-years on doing it again very soon.

Sounds similar to the ones on EBay I'll order one once I get back up the road.
 
Pay a couple of quid more and buy one that's suitable for all Land Rover engines. I was a fool and bought a 300-tdi specific one. i need to do a timing belt on a 200-tdi and doubt that the puller in my kit is suitable.
 
check out crankshaft locking tool - the 300 can be a bit of a bugger.

These are the tools I bought from Difflock, cover more than the 300TDi. General consensus at the time was that these were the best quality and covered a wider range than other commonly available kits.
Certainly I was very impressed.

It's 200tdi tools I need. Going order some tomorrow along with a decent torque wrench. Job I've just come from had excellent Snap-on torque wrenches wish I could have borrowed one of them;)

I made one out of a thick piece of angle iron. Put a rough cut in one end to make enough room for the crank bolt, drilled a couple of holes in it to secure it to the pulley. Worked great.

I also did that, but it bent bolts I used. Though my damper was more stuck than I am led to believe they normally are!

I was concerned about that also. I might have managed 3 bolts instead of 2, I'll have to dig it out and take a look. I made sure I used new bolts though. Mine was very stuck as well. It took several goes with my full weight on the breaker bar.I thought the bar was going to snap and was on the point of giving it up as a bad job when it finally moved.
 
I used a 9mm drill for the timing pin and a wading plug, drilled with a 4.5mm drill for the flywheel locking. Drilled a long bar for the pulley locking and just 'had a go' wiv' a 'normous 'ammer .. worked very well ...

But then I'm skint, as well as being a tight-wad Yorkshireman .. :)
 
Just ordered timing belt kit from Amazon £40 not bad didn't want get an expensive kit as it will only be sitting on shelf.
