i had similar issues on my 300tdi . only my bottom pully had almost an inch of play in it !!!!! Had a hell of a job getting it off as the woodruff key had mushroomed. I got a new pulley with the timing belt kit and fitted a new woodruff key too. did the water pump and p gasket while i was at it
. The guy i bought it off had bought new big end bearings because it was knocking so much. The pump timing was miles out. once i`d replaced the worn out stuff and timed it up, its been sweet as.

yes there is some damage where the retaining pin goes that bit has been broke off i will try and get a pic looks like he started it with the retaining pin stillSam, was the original injection pump actually damaged (ie can you see something broken on the casing etc,or bits missing)?Or was this just what your original mechanic told you?
fingers crossed ppl today should be the day she gets put back together and started lets hope all is ok![]()
