hi fl2002 hope this helps 5/30 fully synthetic gives the best protection apparantly. costly though , i use 10/40 semi synthetic though lot cheaper may be not as good. sure the other guys will have a say on this tim

Ive used Millers oil in my cars for a long time ,never had any problems,

depends on what you're doing with your service intervals. If you're sticking to the 12k, then fully synth is probably the way to go.
If you're doing them every 6k for oil changes, then it could probably take semi synth

I would use Millers and 10w/40, most oil companies state 5w/30 but i dont think you would notice/see a huge difference in either oil. as long as it meets the requirments/standards. Change it regulary but remember at the end of the day it isnt an F1 car...

No, but it's still a precision engineered BMW unit with a turbo which can give trouble (albeit usually due to the crankcase breather) so it would be silly not to use the manufacturer recommended fully synthetic.

Agree wholeheartedly but LR recommend 10W/10 or 15W40 in the TD4 not whether it is fully or semi synthetic... Extract from RAVE below

10/40 semi synthetic. have you seen the price of mobil 5/30 fully synthetic!

yes mobil oil is expensive,but you dont have to use that make of oil do you.just as long as it meets manufacturers spec you can use any make,i buy my oil from opie oils and their prices are excellent,

You have a choice
you can go for the up to date Land Rover recommendation which is a semi synthetic 5w-30 oil (ford spec)
Shell Helix HX7 AF 5w-30
Mobil Super FE Special 5w-30
Castrol Magnatec A1 B1 5w-30
Total Quartz Future 5w-30
or BMW LL04 oil which is a fully synthetic 5w-30 oil made for the BMW longlife service schedule
Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5w-30
Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30
Castrol Edge 5w-30
Total Quartz Ineo MC3 5w-30
there are other brands i know but you get the gist
Make sure you change the breather filter and vent filter. It should be done on every service.

i use halfrads semi doozle oil i know the purist say fully snth . . . .but it int done no harm to my 2002 auto
What I understand is that fully synthetic is ok for people doing 30.000 kms a year or more, for the rest the semi synth would do, on condition it gets regularly serviced, some say even that semi synth even better for engines not doing these numbers (30.000) of kms a year.

That's right
the fully synthetic BMW LL04 oil is made especially for their longlife service regime
semi synthetic 5w-30 will be fine as TD4's are on a fixed 12500 mile service plan
both are good
