hi I have a 2002 freelander td4 and have a strange ticking noise. ive only owned the car for a few months and it has always been there i think. i recently did an oil change as the oil was dirty. we thought the ticking noise was the clutch so had a new one fitted ( the old one was dying anyway ) but the ticking is still there. its only on tickover or low revs, when you press the clutch it stops. you cannot really hear it outside but it sounds like its coming from the area between the drivers dash board and the engine. my local garage thinks it could be a lazy tappet. dont really want to go to a garage that is guessing. when we are driving along it is fine you cannot hear the ticking and the car runs really well. Any thoughts or help would be really appreciated. Thanks Jim

if you press the clutch and it goes get a new garage mechanic! did they replace the thrust bearing at the same time as the clutch? crazy not to.
usually they rumble a bit when idling, or could sound a bit like a mechanical ticking.
Try just slight pressure on the clutch pedal, bit at a time and see if noise dissapears, if it does it sure aint a tappet, its likely to be the clutch pressure plate thrust bearing, if it is and they didnt repace it when they were in there, slap um.

wasnt sure where to put my first post.
:tea:

The imaginatively titltled "Introduce yourself section" perhaps:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Never mind, your here now, :welcome: to the madhouse:D:D:D, hope you've packed your sense of humour:confused:
You'll need it with the Gaylander :p:p

i will try that thanks. will it just be a case of the noise being an irritation or is it serious

last time i had a ticking noise on a car the big end bearing self destructed and threw itself through both sides of the engine

pretty sure it won't be that though ;)

not serious just an irritation, more irritating if it is the prob as its generally a fairly cheap part that could of been done same time.

if they fail its obvious as they really grind and you will feel it through the pedal, and floor, dont reckon you need to worry too much.
i use a van that has a distinctive Ford thrust bearing rumble, and know it aint a prob for many a thousand mile yet. :D

pressing the clutch also disengages idling gears in the gearbox, this can change resonant frequencies...not a **** take honest!, this can make changes to sounds elsewhere in the vehicle, same as increasing revs has the same effect it can stop some rattles and start others.:D
