OK, just been down to the garage....who are currently retapping the thread on one of the stud holes having sheared one off!! Thought that might happen. And of course it was on the bottom row, at the back - a real PITA to get to! So really glad I didn't tackle this one, as that is exactly what I thought might happen....having said that, I haven't had the bill yet! Bugger

Well, that's another £193 the Range Rover has relieved me of! Takes the total up to about £700 since I bought it in November...! Ouch. That was to replace the blowing exhaust manifold gasket, drill out and retap a hole where a stud sheared off, and swap 3 tyres over for new ones (supplied).
Oh well, *touch wood* everything else that needs doing is DIY and relatively inexpensive - and, for the first time, it now sounds like a proper VAT rather than a ticking bomb!!

it does hurt but at least they did they hard bit for ya.
re the stat , I sucked all the coolant out of the expansion tank and the put a rag ont he valley cover just under it, about a pint came out of the manifold when I pulled the stat out but not much before that.
its bit of a bugger to get to the bolts but doable with a wobbler in yer socket set, not much fun in the dark and cold though- just glad it worked thank God!

I have to say, I think I'm gonna leave the stat - the Range Rover is running SO sweetly right now, i'm not gonna fiddle with it! Am gonna give it an oil change this weekend, just because I want to and don't know when it was last done or what's in there (although the oil looks OK and it's running well) and I think that'll be it for now!
Going on our first "Pay & Play" day in a few weeks time, can't wait!!

Yeah, they sound a nice bunch. Just turn up on the day, pay £10 membserhip fee and then £20 for the day and off you go! Have a look at the map on their website - the white and red/white areas are suitable for road-going cars, red area for more experienced offroader drivers and black areas are for proper off-road cars only - external roll cages and the like!!

Mine has stopped ticking now.
I bought a new starter motor in Nov as I felt mine was on the way out but as it was starting ok and the weather wasn't exactly warm I left well alone.
Anyway 23/12 and it wouldn't start - nothing nada. Day before fine.
Anyway local autoelectricery place said they could do it morning of the 24/12 before they all buggered off to the pub.
Anyway they couldn't - efforts had already been made to get the top bolt out it seems and it was well and truely mashed. So off came the manifold, some welding was done and mashed bolt eventually removed. New starter fitted. It starts.
But the ticking sound I had put down to a rocker (not a slipped liner as had been suggested ) has gone so I guess mine was loose manifold bolts.
Just glad I didn't have the car at home trying to do the starter as I wouldn't have got it off either!
Bit of bodywork and the front end sorting this year and all will be well (apart from whatever goes wrong next that is).
Need to look at the front as wheel wobble is an issue - front wheels balanced today and its a bit better but bearings and steering damper next on the list to check.

dkl - sometimes the manifold bolts just need tightening up as I understand, so maybe that's all yours needed? On mine, the gasket was completely shot and needed replacing, and really glad I didn't tackle that job myself.
My mate's Disco has pretty loose steering, think he picked up a new damper for about £20 which we're fitting this weekend - don't think it's a big job. I might even do mine given how cheap it is, although I really only get a wobble through the wheel going over potholes and big undulations in the road - and in Bucks there's a lot of them!

The wheel wobble on mine was caused by worn ball joints on the draglink. The amount of movement (play) was very small, but replacment cured the wheel wobble completely.

Glad I found this post as I have the exact same problem and will now be following your lead, Mike, and leaving it to the experts. I see you are Bucks-based and wondered whether you have ever used Goodyer 4x4 over in Coleshill - I was thinking of sending it over to them for this and a few other jobs?

As fett says, I sold the RR I'm afraid! However, the fix worked fine.
I've heard good things about Graham Goodyer although never used him myself - there's a garage round the corner from me at work which I just dropped it off at, it's a fairly simple job. However, as a 4x4 specialist I have been recommended to use them.
