Got me mate to tig one up with mitered joints for a RR classic once, lovely finish, abou £12 for a length of steel pipe, thought of doing similar, problem is on a freelander a made up one could look really pants, whereas on a defender they don't!
 
I'd be more interested in making proper gaskets for the spart plug cover etc - at least you could wade properly then.
 
For the price yu would have to pay to the job proper, you could by a cheap disco to hammer and then sell it for bits when it fails the not.
 
I want a 1.8 freelander that is so capable it embarrasses discos and tratters! Ok there's always gonna be a few bits where it'll struggle but it's my challenge:D
