Did the thermostat today. What a difference. Warms quickly, good output from the interior heaters and starts loads better once warm!! Looking forward to slightly better mpg now...

Anyway, here's the cheap and cheerful tool I used. Worked a treat and didn't break or anything:

Got one but my viscous wouldn't budge. Got to undo the 4 pulley bolts.

I used the cold chisel and mallet method; but was changing the waterpump as well. Probably not good for the pump bearing if your just doing the viscous.
 
Data, when I had trouble removing my viscous fan I removed 3 of the 4 bolts in the water pump pulley and used a pressure plier to hold the shaft and then it was easy to undo using a 32mm spanner on the viscous fan side.
