Hello All,

Now we're enjoying clement weather in the UK, I've realised my aircon isn't what anyone might call cold.

My HEAV controls show the book symbol after about 5 minutes of running and I can control fan speeds, and direct air all over the place so I don't think I have a stalled blend motor.

So, it's a 1997 4.6 HSE V8 petrol.

First question is, does anyone have a fault reader that lives in or around west London that could scan my car and tell me what's wrong with it.

Second question is does the fact that the book symbol comes on after about 5 minutes running suggest what the fault might be at all? I realise fault code reading is the correct course of action, but having just bought the car, the idea of another £350 on a Nanocom isn't going to go down well with my bank balance just now.

Any advice or similar experience gratefully received.

Get it checked and regassed.
Agree with the Mighty Sirus....

A re-gas would be my option...the HEVAC system waits for a few minutes for the Refridgerant to circulate, if it doesn't detect an appreciable rise in pressure from the pump or temp change, it faults out I believe.

If you go into Kwikfit, apparently, if its already gassed up, they wont charge you for it..... but I bet they will!!

I don't like using Kwikfit if I can help it.

I'll just have to get it serviced properly. Theres a place near me that do a leak detection thing as part of the service, I'm just not sure they'll be quipped with Land Rover diagnostics. If that even matters for servicing the aircon.

I have a recent bill for replacing the evaporator so it must've worked in the recent past.

Lord lets hope it just needs a re-gas!

Mine also gave no fault when it was completely empty of gas ( because I had removed the condensor...).

You def need to get that code read....

Cheers

Jerry

Ditto Jerrytlr & Datatek. I had a visible hole in the top left of my condenser for three months with no book symbol.
Regarding Kwikfit, I have used them for a few years without complaint. If your cold air temp doesn't reduce by 10% they don't charge you. I have even used them as part if my fault finding process at no cost..:D

I have a Nanocom Evo, but for Diesel Only atm.

I work in Raynes Park/Wimbledon, If you can get to me during working hours, and you would like to contribute towards gems/motronic unlock codes I could read the faults for you, show you, save them and send them to you.

Just an idea if no one else is close by...

Not sure you need the GEMS/Motronic engine module to look at the HEVAC:confused:

Gave up on the aircon a long time a go. With the age of the vehicle I don't think the system will ever work to what it was without replacing the whole system on mine. I kept losing the aircon belt to the viscous fan and i think the cost of sorting it was more than it was worth. 3 belts later 2 regasses i gave up and realised LR gave us the big side windows for this eventuality...well planned.

They even thought about the same issue on the evoque...why not take the whole roof off a RR?!

Any idea how much the unlock codes would be? I intend to buy a Nanocom before long, but this might be a good short term fix.

Either way, I'd like to try and get over to you to see if it'll read the HEAV codes anyway. The HEAV is probably a software "module" on a Nanocom isn't it? And as the HEAV system is the same on the Diesel and Petrol cars it should/could work?

Getting to Wimbledon during working hours might be a bit of a problem, but Croydon isn't so far if you can do an evening....

Mine's doing exactly the same at the moment (ie book symbol after about 5 mins). I assumed that since my air con has stopped working again that it was low refrigerant too. Going to try Kwik Fit when I get round to it.

It's too expensive to get the codes read round here - cheaper to just get it regassed.

I could be wrong, but I think I've seen aircon refrigerant for sale in Halfords in a aerosol can?

£50 or thereabouts I think.

Correct but + £10 deposit for can and £££ for little bits you need, connectors etc.

Why would you do it yourself for that much? Kwik Fit only charge about £46 and in theory don't charge if they can't do it (ie due to a leak).

Think they are about 50quid.

Never tried it on a V8, but it may be a module as u and data say.

Can do this evening? Usually home around 6pm.

My air-con doesn't work - NO book symbol

Ditto.

Blend motors give me no trouble, even at 12 yrs old. (Famous last words  )

I used to get the book symbol when I got the vehicle 2 yrs ago. Fitted a new rad and flushed the cooling system. Never seen the book symbol since.
