Hello,

Well you might remember my whining about oil leaks and poor performance up hills. If you don't, well, I basically whined because my 2.5 n/a would loose a hell load of power on any hill, and the drive was starting to get a carpet of oil.

None the less, I've had a terrible knocking sound coming from my engine recently, a knock which ticks over with the engine and resonates through the clutch and the accelerator. The sound would come and go. I've taken me landy down to the specialists that sold it to me and they've run a pressure check on the engine to find that one of the cylinders isn't firing properly. The test showed that one of the four pistons (in the cylinder nearest the cab) was slightly lower than it should be, thus releasing pressure ineffectively and forcing engine oil out of any seams in the block. It is also quite possible that I have a loose piston ring.

Would I be right in thinking that because of this cylinder problem, my engine is loosing compression, and therefore loosing power on hills? I also expect to see a bit of an increase in mpg, is this right?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Low compression means less power...

Could be bad valve seating, or worn rings...

But my 2.5 N/A is crap on hills as well, so you aint alone..

Yeah, well they are old diesel engines, so it's to be expected, but it might make a little difference. Technically I'm only driving on 3 cylinders at the moment.

ah think you need your garage to explain it better to you. also ask them to do a leak down test as that can pin point the leak better than a comp test. also if one piston is lower than the others i'd say it has come away from its con rod or the rod has parted company with the crank.

They'' get to the bottom of it, and should get it fixed free of charge. It's still within its 3 month warranty
