Thought id treat the old girl, (the landy) to a good service. Drained the oil, eventualy change the oil filter, new fuel and air filter, all done. Started her up and the oil light stayed on. £0 seconds later i realised i hadnt put the new oil in :eek:. Switched off, filled up and no damage caused. Am i a lucky boy or what?
 
If that were me the piston would have seized and the con rod would have melted :rolleyes: Very lucky sir :D

My mate in the REME said they ran a 2.5 NA at idle without engine oil to see how long it would take to seize. It was still running 2 days later :eek:

Mind you, they are tough old things and will pretty much run to utter destruction without complaint.
 
Sure it will be fine if 1 second-takes about 6 minutes to blow an engine with no oil reving it from experience

Now that I think on, he never did say what happened to it in the end - maybe it was in the Landy I bought - it would explain a lot :)
 
Yeah I would have thought that there would have still been oil on the bearings so run for a split secon'd shouldn't do any arm :)

I once saw an apprentice mechanic at a citreon dealer where I used to work had a citreon CX ( 1970's ) over a pit and about to start a service on it got out of the car left the engine running and fully dropped the oil out of the sump before someone told him what he had done he quickly jumped in the car and turned it off and finished off the service without any probs and the car ran for years afterwards and was only serviced by us :)
 
I'm assuming that MTB's '£0' second quote is actually 30 seconds (Shift+3 = '£'), guess we will have to wait and see.
 
I have NEVER done such a stupid thing as forgetting to put the oil in the engine.


Mind you, I must admit that on more than one occasion I have forgotten to put the bung back in. Pool of oil all over floor ! :D
 
A friend of mine used to have a petrol station/garage in the 70's, he had a customer/friend who came in quite regularly for petrol.

He drove a Morris Marina company car and it was absolutely gubbed, the engine still ran a treat but it was so badly corroded and worn is was just dangerous.

After some discussion my friend agreed to dump the oil and send him on his way with the oil in a can. He was told to drive off down to the dual carriageway and just drive it till the engine seized, he was then to tip the oil back into the engine so it looked like it had just failed.

The guy came back about 40 minutes later saying nothing had happened, he was sent off again and returned about 2 hours later, it was still running albeit a bit noisy. Turned out the guy had used Molybdenum disulphide additive with every oil change.

Anyway, I think it was taken for a redline blast down the motorway to finally kill it off.
 
I've had 2 - 40 to 50 mile runs since and its running better than ever. That could be down to the new air filter though as i forgot to change that last time. Yes it was 30 sec no more. I thought i would leave it a good while to drain out and do the filters while i was waiting. You know what's its like, noticed the pipe from turbo to air box had split so recut that then just started gazing at other things that will need doing soon then before i knew it i was turning it over.
 
Actually thinking about it, when you start up on a cold morning, guaranteed the oil doesn't reach the pistons for a second or two, surely can't be worse than having no oil for the first second or two....
 
A mate of mine decided to change the oil on his Triumph Dolomite. He added some engine cleaner stuff into the oil and ran it for a time as stated in the instructions then went under it and undid the sump plug emptied the contents then did it back up. After that he added the quantity of oil it stated on the engine. Once done he came to the pub proud of his first foray into mechanical self reliance.

A few days later he mentioned that the gears were crunching so we all piled round after the pub. One of us checked the dip stick and found that the oil was 3/4 up the stick. We then worked out what he had done.....

He had only emptied the gearbox! Then poured the new oil into the engine with the old oil and the engine cleaner. :D

So new engine AND gearbox oil later and no damage despite 100+ miles.

Ha Ha , im not on my own then!
 
at work we deal with gennys and a chap at work put the oil filter on with 2 o rings and another time forgot to put the filler cap back on, both times were after a full strip clean and rebuild, inside and out
