If you you mean that all the numbers are readable but just dim, then yes, change bulbs.
But if you mean some of the pixels that form the numbers are missing then it is possible to repair it.
You say you put pressure on the display and some of the pixels came back, this is the your problem and can be an easy fix, I have fixed mine on both P38's I had/have.
All it is, is a small piece of silcone that sits at the base of the display and between the display ribbon wire, all that happens is it slips and releases the pressure hence lcd display not shows complete numbers.

OK, I'm thinking about getting a new head unit from eBay. Would it matter if I got a walnut one (as in would it fit?)? Mine's currently black plastic.
