I know I'm new to the site, but I have had a quick search around the site without an answer.
I have a disco 300tdi
Today whilst driving I noticed my temperature gauge went really high and at the same time I noticed the fans/blowers were cool/cold, I drove some more and the temp started to drop a bit with the air through the blowers turning warm again.
I stopped and checked water which was really hot when it cooled I checked the water and it hadn't dropped or lost any.
I've checked the oil filler cap too but no sign of head gasket.
This has continued all day but I am really concerned.
Since owning the disco the temp has never moved from 1/3 of the way up on the gauge once warm until now, so I feel it could be something serious.
Has anyone come accross a similar problem before or suggestions to what it could be?
Cheers
Steve

check rad is hot all over entire surface when up to temp if its not it needs replacing ,check coolant level with thermostat bung out it needs to over flow level in expansion tank isnt necessarily the same as engine

you need to check the core all over they have a tendency for coolant to enter a drop straight down and out as top hose is on same side as bottom ,never use expansion tank as indicator of coolant level

ok thanks, it didn't drop any water as I drove slowly around the block near home to see if it had. Or am I misunderstanding you?

misunderstanding water in rad to cool properly has to flow in all parts of rad when you feel rad cold parts mean no coolant flow through that part ,because top hose and bottom are on same side if baffles come loosec water drops straight down and out of that side leaving rest of rad cold meaning there isnt enough cooling and overheating occurs ,but system has to be full ,and cold heater means its not

I get you. Thanks.
Ok, I will check in the morning, but what action is needed if this is the case as it sounds highly likely?
Also Is it driveable?
Why is it intermitant?

check coolant level first with both rad and thermostat bungs out fill to over flowing and replace each one as it does rad first obviously then thermostat housing ,overfilling expansion bottle wont hurt as excess will come out and find proper level it cant do it with a shortage ,if when warm rad isnt hot all over its still driveable but watch temp ,rad will need replacing £100 ish for a new one easy to fit

i dont know thats why your going to check ,could just be short on coolant i mention it as has been the biggest cause of overheating ive come across,
