Ok thanks ... I did think that I may have possibly set it a bit low and that it may be trial and error (although I don't want 'error' to end up with a damaged engine

I'll assume for the moment the thermostat reads correct and up it slightly. When I tow my tin tent of course it'll run hotter so fans will probably be on all the while.

It will be trial and error, you do not want the fans running below best engine temp, you don't want them running all the time at best engine temp. So something slightly above it is the norm for electric fan operation.

Read the instructions, engine up to temperature, turn the stat until the fans operate, then back it off slowly until they just stop. The markings on the stat control are not at all accurate. The fans will then operate as soon as the engine starts to go above normal tmeperature.

Hi Datatek,
I did read your instructions and follow them to the letter

It was just a querie because the fans seemed to come on easily and I really wondered how accurate both gauges were (car temp & thermostat) and wether I had actually let my vehicle warm up enough!

If the fans come on too easily, back the stat off a fraction more. Best to go for a run so you know it's good and hot then adjust with the engine running.

On the way out to the pub last night I did just that

The new setting was just slightly higher than originally. Hoping that now I am not driving an albeit 'cream crackered' fan I might get a better fuel consumption - I might actually get 20.5 mpg rather than 20.3 mpg

(too much town driving!!!)

You will not see a big difference in summer, but it makes a noticable difference in winter with a quicker warm up
