help needed.... please

the aux belt on my tdi defender squeaks ear pearcingly loud when the old belt is replaced with a new one. i have replaced the belt twice and the replacement belt squeaks immediately and seems to scuff slightly on the out side of the belt. the softer the rubber on the out side of the belt becomes, the louder the squeak (the old belt has become brittle and hard, and i think this is the reason that it doesnt squeak). the belt isnt rubbbing up against anything.

ive replaced the bearing on the tentioner and can find no obvious problems with the line of pullies and they all seem to spin nicely. i have isolated the squeak to the belt (even though it sounds obvious) by starting the engine with no belt, which produced no sound. battery is charging fine.

i am completely stumped and have run out of ideas and would really appreciate some advice :confused::confused:

Loosen the tensioner pulley off and slip a penny or a washer behind the pulley in the 9 o'clock position. Re-tighten and then listen to silence.;)

It's annoying when you fork out for several new belts when 1p is all thats needed.:D:D:D
